Ten-man Stoke defeat nine-man Axminster

TEN-man Stoke Gabriel defeated nine-man Axminster by 28 runs in a real end-of-season affair.

Stoke have long been resigned to relegation while Axminster have known for a while they aren’t going up or down this year.

To make matters worse for Axminster, Steve Wakeley broke a finger early on while fielding and took little part in the game, other than to go into bat last.

Sam Parker (45) and Seb Ansley (78) knocked up 124 for the second Stoke wicket after the early demise of Billy Alcock.

Veteran Doug Ansley (25no) held the middle order together  as Stoke reached 172 all out in the 35th over.

Spin proved Stoke’s undoing with four wickets each for Dave Field (4-27) and Gary Larcombe (4-31).

Axminster were going along nicely at 104 for two with Joel Seward (48no) and Sam Farrow (28) on top of the bowling.

Losing five wickets for 23 runs changed the came completely and Axminster folded to 144 all out.

Seb Ansley capped a man-of-the-match performance with three for 40 and there were two wickets each for Kai Horsburgh and Issac Whittington.

Stoke are at Barnstaple this Saturday. Axminster face Plymstock.
