Final tables amended following appeals

DEVON Cricket League bosses have redrawn two final tables, altering promotion and relegation outcomes.

Exeter Civil Service have been moved from third to second in the F Division and will now be promoted.

Cullompton, who thought they had finished second, have been demoted to third in the final table.

Clyst St George finished in the C Division bottom two and looked destined to relegation with Yelverton.

Following an appeal to the Devon Cricket League, ratified by the Devon Cricket Board earlier this week, Clyst have moved once place up the table and Plymouth CS&R go down instead.

The tables were altered due to problems with a little-known and even less understood rule concerning bonus points for awarded for declaring early and going on to win the game.

An error in the drafting of the rule wasn’t picked up when the league rules were changed and appeared in the competition handbook.

A club can declare with 10 per cent of their overs to go if they choose – fine in the 50-over Premier Division but less clear in the 45-over divisions lower down where 10 per cent would by 4.5 overs.

An example printed in the handbook caused more confusion, prompting Clyst and Exeter CS to appeal against previous points recalculations.

Both said they should be re-awarded points deducted for not declaring soon enough. Those points would make a difference to their final positions.

Stuart Munday, the league chairman, called an appeal panel comprising David Gambie (Exeter SJ), Nigel Mountford (Bovey Tracey) and Paul Mitchell (Abbotskerswell) together to consider the  claims.

“They felt the wording was ambiguous and on that basis said the clubs concerned should be given their points back,” said Munday.

“The final arbiter is the Devon Cricket Board so we asked them to have a look and they came to the same conclusion.

“I have been in touch with the clubs concerned by phone to tell them the outcome as I felt that was better than getting a letter or an email.”
