Abbots see lifeline snatched away

ABBOTSKERSWELL are on the way down from the A Division after losing by 10 wickets against Brixham in their final match of the season.

Abbots had nothing to lose on the last day of the season as they were bottom of the table and needed Chudleigh and Lewdown to lose to stay up. They had to win as well.

Lewdown were beaten by Hatherleigh and Chudleigh lost to Plympton – so for a while an escape route opened up.

Abbots had held Brixham to 198 for eight, collecting four bowling bonus points in the process, and reached 156 for three in reply on the chase.

All Abbots had to do was knock off the rest of the runs to complete the Great Escape, but it wasn’t to be. Two weeks ago they were 25 points adrift but grabbed a possible lifeline by beating Budleigh Salterton.

Wickets tumbled – five for 10 runs – as Abbots folded for 188.

Defeat let Lewdown off the hook and sent Abbots down with Chudleigh.

“We are very disappointed to have got so close to staying up and not done so, especially after the position we were in two weeks ago,” said skipper Richard Acton.

“The guys gave it everything to set ourselves up to win the match, we just couldn't finish it off unfortunately.

“I could not have have asked for anymore from the guys throughout the season, “It has been a tough season, but one we can still take a lot from.

“We have a young side who will be more experienced next year and ready to tackle the B Division.”

Mark Orchard top scored for Brixham with 63 and put on 99 with Jake Gregory (45) for the fifth wicket after Hugo Whitlock (4-48) reduced the visitors to 54 for four – Tim Robinson making 31.

Charlie Garratt (1-21) and Jake DeAraugo (1-23) kept the runs down in tidy 10-over spells.

Off went Abbots in hot pursuit with Garratt (80) and DeAraugo (45) hoisting 119 for the first wicket.

The turning point was the introduction of foxy off-spinner Paul Heath, who ran through the early order on his way to a four for 24 haul – Garratt among them.

Gregory picked off DeAraugo and after that it was downhill all the way.

Simon Caunter, who was called up at the last minute to make up the numbers, got a bowl for his trouble and took four for 19 as Abbots crumbled.
