Match Report  North Devon vs. West Devon
West Buckland School, 28th April 2013

The toss was won by North Devon and they chose to field first and after 11 over's they had reduced the West to 17 for 5 all 5 wickets going to Jack Gibbs who finished his first spell with figures of 5 for 5 off 6 over's, he was very well supported from the other end by Jamie Lathwell who had bowled 5 over's for 6 runs and but for a very impressive innings from Leon Horn who came into bat at number 4 and was last man out for an excellent 46 he was the only batsman to reach double figures and was largely responsible for West making 108 all out in the 40th over.

The north's reply got off to a good steady start reaching 21 in the 7 over when they lost their first wicket which was an unfortunate misunderstanding leading to a run out, after that the runs came steadily until a minor collapse took them from 77 for 2 in the 14 over to 99 for 7 in the 21st over with one batsman retired hurt due to a knee injury but the remaining batsmen held there nerve and saw the North home with 3 wickets and 22 over's to spare.

All in all it was a very good performance from the North who bowled and fielded exceptionally well with notable performances from all the bowlers with the stand out bowler being Jack Gibbs with Figures of 8o 3m 7r 5w I should also mention one outstanding catch from John Morgan while fielding at cover he dived to his right taking the ball in both hands whilst horizontal to the floor and hanging on when he hit the ground and must surely go down as the catch of the season.

The West were very munch indebted to a superb innings from Leon Horn in helping them to 108 but in spite of their very spirited bowling and fielding they could not bowl the North out who finished winners by 3 wkts.

Match Report  South Devon vs. East Devon
Ipplepen Cricket Club, 28th April 2013

An unbroken stand of 98 for the 5th wicket proved decisive as the South emerged with a winning draw against the East having scored 19 more runs and taken 5 more wickets.

South skipper Ashley Causey won the toss and elected to bat first on a hard dry pitch. That decision looked vindicated as he opened the batting with George Holland and the openers proceeded to race the score on to 57/0 after 10 overs.

The introduction of change bowlers Bovey and Williams for the East soon regained some control and after Holland (11) snicked an edge through to keeper Maunder, Senior (0) fell to a stunning catch by Lammonby and then Williams knocked over Causey (20) to leave the South looking far less confident at 65/3

That left Szymanski and Pitman at the wicket for the South and some steady batting from the pair moved the score on past the 100 mark and South had regained their confidence with the board showing 103/3 at drinks (22 overs).

However the East may well be left to rue the fact they dropped Szymanski twice during the middle overs, and although Williams produced another turning delivery to account for Pitman (18) the wicket of Szymanski would surely have had a greater effect on the outcome of the game.

The departure of Pitman brought King to the wicket and together with Szymanski the pair played mature intelligent cricket to keep the scoreboard rolling with a mixture of touch play and power hitting. Szymanski brought up his 50 and with wickets in hand the final 10 overs went for 58 runs.

By the end of the 44th and last over the pair were still together having added 98 runs in just under 18 overs. Szymanski finished on an unbeaten 72 and King on 30 not out. Williams (2/28 off 8) was the pick of the East bowlers although Short (0/18 off 8) did a great job of restricting the run rate in the middle overs. Bovey (1/10 off 4) may have played a greater part but for an injury sustained during the innings.

With 207 needed for a win, the start of the East innings was always going to be crucial in determining the outcome of the match. Openers Khan and Williams played watchfull cricket against the hostile new ball attack of Causey and Szymanski.

However having safely negotiated the first 9 overs for 6 runs without any loss, Williams was undone by Szymanski (in the final over of his spell) to be bowled for a watchful 5. This brought Lammonby to the wicket and the left hander looked in confident touch until he wandered down the wicket to a wide ball from Pitman and keeper Senior whipped off the bails for that most gut-wrenching of dismissals - stumped off a wide - for 6.

Another partnership seemed to be developing between Khan and Maunder but some sharp work from Goodman and Senior resulted in the run-out of Khan for 19 with the South turning a half-chance into a wicket with excellent fielding. Cooper was next man in for the East and after the start of yet another promising partnership Maunder (18) was removed by more excellent work between Pitman and Yabsley.

89/4 was soon 94/5 as Cooper (12) chipped a leading edge to Pitman immediately after the drinks break and despite some solid batting by Bovey by now the East were still less than half way to the required total with 5 wickets down and 30 overs bowled.

After the departure of Dunn (7) the East's best partnership of the match - worth 43 for the 7th wicket - between Bovey and Crowe was broken when Crowe (18) chipped a catch to Causey at cover from the bowling of Goodman.

Despite some defiance from the final pair of Mutter (14*) and Ferriday (2*) to prevent the South taking all 10 wickets, the East ran out of overs wtill 19 runs short of the required target.

Economical bowling figures of 0/17 off 8 from Causey and 0/22 off 8 from Yabsley were major factors for the South, although Goodman (2/27 off 8); Flower (2/36 off 4.3) and Szymanski (2/26 off 6.3) were more in the wickets.

Perhaps the biggest cause for concern for the watching County manager was the fact the two teams between them combined to bowl 39 wides and 9 no balls!

In the final analysis it is perhaps telling that the South had 3 partnerships worth 45 runs or more while the East had none. The other major difference between the teams was that the South claimed 2 run outs, a stumping and 5 catches while the East missed several similar chances including the dropping of Szymanski in single figures

Match Report  West Devon vs. East Devon
Plymouth College, 5th May 2013

The weather finally arrived in England and it made for a very enjoyable days cricket  we were asked to bat by the West and made the most of it. Both openers looked in great touch and were playing shots all round the park on a challenging wicket with an equally challenging outfield. Nearly every run was being actually run as the ball slowed up in the lush grass which would test the stamina on both sides. Equally testing was the wicket which saw balls popping and moving laterally from good lengths but anything short was punished. Callum Werth Showing how its done with a very economic first 5 overs leaking only 1 run. Tom Williams was looking good till he was the first to get a devilish one from Ben Jones that squirted through to hit the stumps with the score on 21. Tom Lammonby and Jamie Khan continued the hard graft and put on 64 before Jamie Khan was caught for 30. Tom Oxland and Tom Lammonby put on a 100 partnership before both fell in quick succession for 29 and 76 respectively in the 35th and 36th over with the score on 190. The knock but Lammonby was mature as well as brutal. The remaining batsmen anchored by Sam Maunder (31 not out) all tried to pile on more misery for the west. Mikey Cooper with a swift 18, Robert Dunn 8 saw East Devon to a run a ball 264 from the 44 overs.
The pick of the bowlers for the West, Payne with 2 wickets, Callum Werth only conceding 9 runs from his 7 overs including 4 maidens.

A deserved tea and a few reminders about hard work yet to be done saw Henry mutter and Sid Fereday bowl a mean opening spell only conceding 26 runs from the first 10 overs with Sid unlucky again with edges just evading Fielders. Henry Mutter again showing his quality bagging two wickets with one in his first over. Robert Dunn took a wicket in his first over and one for Ben Hayes left west Devon 33 for 4 from 15 overs. The run rate seemingly larger was made virtually impossible when the spin twins restricted the west to 73 from the next 16 overs. Both Tom Williams and Devon Short returned figures of 8 overs, 2 maidens, 1 wicket for 14 runs and have both excelled this competition. Henry Mutter and Tom Williams have topped the wicket taking table with 5 each, Devon Short with 4. The west finished on 98 for 7 with Charlie Fanous claiming a wicket also. Dan Farnham the west only batsman of note to make a good score of 28 not out

East Devon ahead by 166 runs at the close.
