EXETER and Clyst Hydon were the victorious sides in week one of the Island Cricket Exeter T20 league (Division One), beating Shobrooke Park and Thorverton respectively.
Exeter batted first at Shobrooke, posting 147-5 from their 20 overs. Tom Viljoen (21) and George Greenway (30) got things moving up front, before a knock of 52 from Steve Morris. Shobrooke were in trouble from the start in reply against Merrick Steward’s 3-8 from four overs and number nine Jon James – with 48no – was one of only two home batsmen in double figures as Shobrooke were bowled out for 110.
Clyst Hydon’s win at Thorverton was a much closer affair, the visitors chasing down 130 to win with just one ball to spare! Thorverton’s total was built around half centuries from Paul Fielder (55) and Daniel Beatty (50), with Clyst’s Dhanuja Haturusingha claiming a hat-trick in tidy figures of 4-10. The visitors laid a solid platform on the chase through Ian Sutton (24) and Rumesh Batagodage (30), but were pegged back by home skipper Jake Choules with 3-27. Clyst’s captain Graham Trude batted patiently for his 17no and with time running out, Matthew Fitt sprinted a three to see his side home.
In Division Two, Clyst St. George made their league debut with a victory over the Met Office. The weathermen batted first and posted 138-7, Pete Weston opening up with 85 against good bowling from Dan Takle (2-16) and Paul Laverick (2-32). Clyst were well on their way through a first wicket partnership between Chris Ferro (50) and Nathan Wells (25), but it was left to Ben Pullan’s 47no to finish the job, St. George winning by 7 wickets. Rami Yedidi took 2-14 for the visitors.
In another close game, Exwick beat visiting Topsham St. James by three wickets in the penultimate over. Topsham’s 135-7 was built around 39 from Ed Baxter, with Rehan Caryl taking 4-29. Exwick were indebted to a mid-innings stand between Vic Murphy (40) and Ray Grunsett (42) as they chased their target down.
