Devon U13's v Hampshire U13's 2011

Devon U13's v Hampshire U13's

"Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life"

The first game of the ECB Under 13 County Championship saw the side up against what was expected to be one of the stronger sides in the competition.  Despite a decidedly unpromising weather forecast, Heathcoat was at its best and the threatening skies decided to drop their water elsewhere.

Hampshire won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Devon to bat. Their pacy and impressive opening pair bowled immaculately, and Devon had  a tough start, losing Lathwell to his first ball, with only one on the board.  Wickets fell at regular intervals, with none of the top order making a significant score.  At 90 for 7 there was a threat of serious meltdown. As in the previous match, Alfie Huxtable provided the innings that gave Devon a less embarrassing total. Along with Ben Green (20) Huxtable put on 36 runs for the 6th wicket and a further 63, in the best stand of the day, for the 8th wicket with the hard hitting Ben Steer, who took 22 from one over off the returning opening bowler. It took a fine piece of fielding and throw from the deep to run Steer out, when it looked like a competitive total would be posted. His 34 was only bettered by Huxtable with 36. Devon were eventually all out in the 37th over for 158.

Devon neded to start as well as Hampshire had in the field.  It was not to be.  Hampshire, clearly confident after their first innings performance ,took advantage of a lack lustre bowling and fielding effort from Devon. After 21 overs the score was 89 for no wicket, with the imperious Joe Theobold in total command.  A comprehensive victory was in sight.  The drinks break gave an opportunity to regroup and set the team some specific targets, to at least take some positives from the game. Matt Cooke's clear message that we must be sharper and more disciplined in every aspect of our game had an effect (or there was something in the drink). A target of 4 wickets for 40 runs was set.

Devon looked a different side and took 4 wickets for 36 runs, with Jamie Telford leading the way with two catches, one a superb effort, and smart ground fielding.  Hampshire were strong enough to regroup and sensibly took no chances as they reached their target with 3 overs to spare. Toby Codd was the most successful Devon bowler with 2 for 22 from 7 overs.

Losing to a Hampshire side that had already played 3 games was no disgrace, but the performance of the side, against the targets we had set ourselves as a team was disappointing. We expect to have 4 or more partnerships of at least 30 in a full innings.  We only managed 2. We do not lose wickets in bunches. We did today. We plan to run positively and put pressure on fielders. We didn't today. We will bat our 40 overs. Not today.  In the field we will have a positive attitude, with strong body language.  It took us 20 overs before we did this.

On the plus side there is plenty to work with, and we are a much better side than this performance.  The real plus for the day was the absolutely marvellous tea put on by Diana Thompson and all the Mum's and Dad's and players themselves.  The Manager was especially impressed with the chocolate brownies!! Thank you.

Heathcoat themselves were superb hosts and did everything to make it an enjoyable and trouble free day.
