Ivybridge cling on to promotion hope

IVYBRIDGE are still in the B Division promotion mix after routing Plymstock by 91 runs.

With one-round of games to go the runners-up spot behind champs Tavistock is a two-way tussle between Bideford in second place and Ivybridge eight points behind in third.

Ivybridge have to beat lowly Braunton this Saturday and hope Bideford slip up against Thorverton, whose own promotion prospects nosedived after they lost to Tavistock.

Gareth Andrew top scored for Ivybridge with 65 in a total of 184 for six,

Along the way Andrews hared in stands of 51 with Jeewan deSilva (17) and 49 with Kelvin Trent (28).

Plymstock were short handed in the bowling department with Dave Orchard and George Barnicott missing.

Pick of the bowlers with two for 20 was Morgan Parkinson. James Nichols wasn’t far behind with two for 29.

Plymstock skipper Nichols had brought the youngsters in for experience and batted himself down the order.

By the time Nichols got out Plymstock were 48 for five – Teddy Richards in and out for 27 – and the game over as a contest.

James Bullock (2-10) and Harry Soloman (2-30) had done most of the damage.

Nichols went on to make 25, but ran out of partners as Ramesh Perera (4-15) picked off the lower order.

Skipper Andrews isn’t talking about promotion, probably because the Bridge have been close before and missed out.

On the win over Plymstock he said: “It was a good, all-round performance.

“Our185 for six was a good total on a bowler-friendly wicket.

“ James Bullock was again excellent with the new ball.”

Opposite number Nichols said Andrews’ knock was a quality innings scored by a batter clearly in pain from a back condition, which is probably going to need surgery.

He added: “We were a few short today and took the decision to blood the youngsters and get them involved.

“Next week we go to Axminster and will look to finish on a high.”
