Pens dispatch Kingsbridge by nine wickets

IPPLEPEN warmed up for the top-of-the-table clash against South Devon this Saturday with a thumping nine-wicket win over lowly Kingsbridge.

Pens needed a result after losing to Chagford seven days earlier and it was always on the cards after Kings were dismissed for 129.

Kingsbridge’s batting crumbled under pressure from Kiwi left-armer Caleb Gaylard whoe seven for 18 sent them sliding.

James Westlake (32), James Ellis (37) and Will Mathewman (28) had helped Kingsbridge reach a promising 122 for two.

Gaylard’s first spell of one for 13 off five overs didn’t really hint at what was to come.

He took six for five and was on a hat-trick twice as Kings lost seven wickets for a run each.

The odd ones out were removed by Steve Bowden (2-23).

Joe Abbott was Pens’ only casualty in the 22 overs needed to knock off the runs.

Jack Lewis (37no) and Tom Dyer (55no) took Pens over the line.

Saturday’s showdown at South Devon can’t come soon enough for Pens, who trail the unbeaten leaders by 12 points.
