West DACO welcome for Peter Lever

West DACO welcome for Peter Lever

To help to look forward to the 2014 season the West Area Branch of the Devon Association of Cricket Officials recently asked Peter Lever to tell a few stories from his illustrious cricketing past to an informal meeting of invited guests in Plymouth.

At the start of the evening Peter was asked to present the following awards:

The Jack Eustis cup awarded to Brian Staplehurst for the West Area Official who members feel has best supported the cause in 2013.

The Len Horton trophy awarded to Rhys Callicott in recognition for his achievements in umpiring as a 'Junior Official'.

The Tony Miller Award to Danny Daniels; nominated at the West Area AGM as the member who has best furthered the aims of DACO in 2013.

Peter was known as a rapid but accurate bowler & wicket taker, taking 41 victims in seventeen Tests for England from 1970 to 1975, and a handy batsman with a top score of 88 not out. He also played ten One Day Internationals, including the 1975 Cricket World Cup, taking 11 wickets.

Along with several colourful accounts from Test matches, Peter had his audience laughing at peoples’ antics during his career with Lancashire as well as England; he also gave his forthright views on the coaching & selection systems…both then and now.

Everyone present enjoyed the Q & A session at the end and were left in no doubt how fortunate we are to have someone of Peter’s calibre right on our doorstep. Peter is now linked with Lewdown C.C. and finds time to help with all levels of the game.

Further, similar, events are planned in the ‘West’. If you are interested in coming along, contact Bill Pinhey: billpinhey@googlemail.com for further details.
