Setback for Plymouth

PLYMOUTH’S title challenge suffered a setback when they were eight-wicket losers at Exeter.

Openers James Toms – caught behind first ball – and Ben Stein didn’t last long, but a stand of 31 between John Varcoe (23) and Jake Luffman (10) started to repair the damage.

Exeter kept the pressure on through George Greenway (2-41), Neal Prowse (2-14) and in particular Adam Gribble, who bowled eight overs for 18 runs.

Harry Stephenson was last man out for 34 in a Plymouth total of 128  - the final victim for Exeter’s Somerset Academy spinner Dominic Bess (3-10).

Plymouth attacked through their seamers and at 25 for two with Ben Green and Will Steward both caught in the cordon off Rob Bennett were back in the game.

The spinners couldn’t make a breakthrough though and Exeter just waited for a bad ball and dispatched it.

Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon batted through for 47 not out and with Prowse unbeaten on 46 at the other end the game was done and dusted in the 25th over.

“We were much sharper at the start compared to last week,” said Lenygon.

“Ben Green and George Greenway were brilliant.

George bowled nine overs straight and looked like a getting a wicket in every over.

“Ben Green was constantly beating the outside ridge, they both deserved another wicket.

“All the bowlers after those TWO bowled with great discipline as usual.

“The game was over at half time and it's a victory we owe to our bowlers.

“It's especially pleasing as we were missing four guys from the week before. We are developing a very strong squad.”

Plymouth skipper Hooper said there were no hiding places on a day when his underperformed.

“We were outplayed in all departments and were never at the races,” said Hooper.

“I take a bit of the blame as, considering we were in second place, I should be making this team think they can win the league rather than playing it down.

“It felt like an end of season dead rubber match rather than a match that could see us remain in second place and keeping the pressure on Sidmouth.

“Their lads bowled well and their batsman scored the runs, although it wasn't particularly pretty.

“This was only our second defeat this whole season so we'll be looking to get back to winning ways against Exmouth next weekend and push us back up into the top three.”
