Paignton confirmed as champions

MISSION accomplished! Paignton are on their way back to the top flight as champions after beating Barton by 34-runs in the big Bay derby.

Paignton were already assured of promotion going into the game, but needed one more win to be certain Plympton would not overhaul them for top spot.

Skipper Connor Bryan led from the front for Paignton with 77 off 78 balls – he hit seven fours and three sixes – in a total of 281 for seven.

Barton gave it their best shot – Andy McVeigh slamming 80 after they had collapsed to 85 for six in reply – but they ran out of steam with 2.1 overs to go on 247 all out.

Having fallen short in the final month last season, Paignton were determined to go all then way in 2014 – and as champions too.

“The boys achieved what they set out to do from the start of the season,” said Bryan.

“They were a pleasure to captain and are looking forward to life back in the premier next year, exactly where we belong as a club.”

Zubyar Hamza had a rare failure for Paignton – he was out for seven to Mark Gilmour – but Ollie Higgs (64) and Richard Ashworth soon made up for any deficiency with a stand of 92.

When Ashworth was caught behind off Tom Drake, Higgs kept going with Bryan as Paignton reached 164 for three.

Bryan was fifth out on 232 with six overs to go, during which Rob Shergold (18), George Benton (10no) and  George Yates (15no) added another 49.

Barton struggled against the Paignton seamers – Shergold (3-60) and Benton (3-35) and first then found Yates (2-32) a handful too.

Skipper Adam Parker (34) started the fightback in a stand of 47 with McVeigh before the returning Benton split tem up.

McVeigh and Tom Porter (24) kept the revival going by notching 51 – and Barton were not finished yet.

Andy Hele joined in after Porter fell to Yates and his 26 off 18 balls formed part of a stand of 56 in six overs with McVeigh.

Chris Kelmere spun out McVeigh at 239 for nine and wrapped things up by  dispatching Hele.
