Devon Indoor U13 School County Championships

8 teams from schools across the County descended on Exeter University for a day to battle it out for the right to be named Devon Indoor U13 School County Champions 2015.

Upon arrival, teams were greeted by members of the Exeter University Student Volunteer Scheme (SVS) and provided with their schedule and order of play. After a short briefing the preliminary pools commenced. Each game was overseen by a professional umpire appointed by the Devon Association of Cricket Officials (DACO) with further SVS students assisting with scoring. The standard of play was good – and more importantly there was not much difference between the participating teams. Both pools had 3 way ties in terms of points with even the difference in runs scored being incredibly small.

Bideford and Uffculme could both consider themselves unlucky to finish 4th in their pools. In their play off match Bideford came out on top to secure 7th place leaving Uffculme in 8th.

Colyton Grammar comfortably overcame Churston Ferrers Grammar meaning they finished 5th and 6th respectively.

In the first semi-final South Dartmoor posted a challenging 91. This was set up on the back of an unbroken opening wicket stand which saw both batters retire. After 4 overs of their reply Devonport High (DHSB) were up with the run rate. However, the steady loss of wickets slowed their progress and they finished 12 runs short of the South Dartmoor total.

Meanwhile in semi-final 2 St Peters batted first and set what looked like a modest 74. A couple of tight early overs in which both openers were removed suddenly brought the game back into the balance. However, a big partnership for the 3rd wicket steadied the Ivybridge ship and despite losing 2 wickets in the penultimate over they reached the total with 3 balls to spare.

The 3rd place play off was a re-run of the pool game between St Peters and DHSB with the result going the same way meaning DHSB grabbed the bronze medals.

The final was also a re-run of a morning pool game. This time South Dartmoor batted first and started solidly. The steady loss of wickets in the second half of the innings slowed their progress and much to coach Scott Chappell’s dismay they were dismissed with 5 balls to spare! So, 89 scored and Ivybridge’s reply got off to the worst possible start as they lost a wicket to the very first ball. Good partnerships kept them level with the South Dartmoor run rate until the end of the 5th over. At the end of the 7th over they were on 73. After 7 runs from the first 3 balls all results were still possible. The tide turned though as South Dartmoor took 2 wickets in consecutive balls to take the tie just out of reach. Ivybridge finished on 86 – just 4 runs short of victory meaning South Dartmoor reversed the earlier result and were crowned County Champions.

South Hams and West Devon Indoor Cricket

The South Hams and West Devon area Indoor Boys cricket competitions were hotly contested. Both U13 and U15 age groups were played in a round robin format with results between the participating schools being very close. In the U13s Ivybridge came out on top narrowly ahead of Okehampton who were County Finalists last year and Kingsbridge. Meanwhile, Kingsbridge were victorious in the U15 event ahead of Okehampton and hosts Tavistock.
