Thors still in hot pursuit

THORVERTON remain in hot pursuit of Tavistock at the top of the B Division table following a tense two-wicket win over arch rivals Shobrooke Park.

Thors appeared to have done the hard bit by dismissing Shobrooke for 104 – Jake Choules and Jake Crouch taking three wickets each.

Dan Beatty took two for 14 and held on to five catches to remove the first five Shobrooke batters.

Richard Pyle top scored for Shobrooke with 25.

Shobrooke then reduced Thorverton to 30 for five in reply – Alvin Pollard (3-25) and Nick Prell (3-27) doing the damage - and it was only thanks to a dogged knock of 38 from vice-captain Dave Baldock that they got over the line. Crouch chipped in with 15 – valuable in the context of a low-scoring game.

“Dave batted with great control in difficult conditions and although he didn’t win it on his own we wouldn’t have won without him,” said Thors’ skipper Graham White.

“It was a wet wicket which made it difficult to bat on and had Shobrooke made 130 it would have been difficult to get.

“Low-scoring it might have been, but it was a good game of cricket and bears out my opinion that this is a competitive division with not a lot between any of the sides.”

White probably isn’t wrong in his summing up as there are only 13 points between Shobrooke, third from bottom and Bideford who are third from top.

Phil Anning, the Shobrooke captain, said: “We didn't get enough runs.

“Richard Pyle again top scored to show what good form he is in.

“We bowled and fielded really well - Alvin Pollard and Nick Prell had two outstanding spells – but we didn’t have enough runs on the board…”

Thorverton are at home to Plymstock this Saturday. Shobrooke go to Braunton.
