Desperately Disappointed Devon Dip Out To Hampshire in County Cup
Sincere thanks to Baz and his colleague for all their hard work in getting this match played at West Buckland School after the deluge on Saturday and early Sunday morning but as they suggested the sun came out and it turned into a lovely day-well the weather did and it was yet another fantastic tea! If we had called it off, due to the weather and weather forecast- would we have gone through? That's just not cricket.

After an hours delay due to the weather the match got underway slightly late. With the weather conditions and fact the track had been covered it was always going to be an important toss to win as you would want to bat first at West Buckland School- and we lost it! Hampshire rightly decide to bat. Jack Popham soon found out his ankle was not right and the more Alex Hunt tried the tighter his body got and he struggled to bowl the required length and use the pitch. Henry Thompson thrown in early however bowled well for the second week running and was rewarded when he had Boon caught by Josh Mailling in the ninth over. Henry's first four overs only going for 4 runs. Batting was difficult but Hampshire progressed until the nineteenth over when Alex Hunt took a fantastic running catch to get rid of Sennet off Ben Stein. Alex's athletics, in the field,  for such a big lad, is becoming a legend! What hands! Wood and Flanders took the score onto 70 before Stein bowled Wood and then shortly afterwards Ellis. 70-4 off 24 overs. Jack Cherrington then had Flanders LBW. Spin was proving very difficult to play as it was turning and occasionally spitting. Rather than bring himself on Mikey Cousens then turned to Paul Heard, who bowled superbly taking 2-9 off his 5 overs, pitching it up, bowling straight and letting the pitch do the rest. Henry Thompson and Josh Mailing returned to bowl at the death and both picked up wickets, Josh bowling superb off cutters not that Seth Jackson noticed. 134 all out in 41.3 over about par on this track and definitely gettable if Devon batted sensibly, did not panic and paced their innings.

Callum Cload and Rhys Davies opened and Callum sets the tone hitting the first ball for 4-play positively Callum and hit the bad ball James' told him. The score fairly races along, until Rhys tries to hit a straight ball and an inside edge bowls him. 27-1 off 6. Enter Mikey Cousens. It will not happen-it did- missed the first ball wide out side his off stump, then he got a good ball, snicked-gloom? No -  absolutely not. No rescue remedy needed with this side! Bat to orders, keep the score ticking along at three ish an over, play in the V, take singles, rotate the strike, no need to take big risks, do the basics and Callum and Laurence took the score along nicely to 58, a little under the required run rate, if it rained and the match was abandoned, and perhaps starting to get a little bogged down by Hampshire's spinners. May then is out bowled. Shortly afterwards Callum trys to pick the run rate up and chips to mid wicket , hit it and Paul Heard, promoted to try and push the score on, arrives at the crease. The scoring rate does pick up but unfortunately Josh runs out Paul. Whether this affects Josh or my words of "don't you dare play that reverse sweep or any other rash shot" plays on Josh's mind but he is not himself and when he walks across his stumps he loses his leg stump. Ben Stein disappointedly follows, come on Ben money where.. and Jack Cherrington and Jack Dart  are in the hot seat. With the score on 116 in the 40th over. Darty plays a drive, inside out and is caught. Next over, Alex gets a big inside edge and is bowled and Devon are 116-9 in the 41st over. Cherry decides the ball is there to hit and takes 10 off Watts. What relief and joy. Get your head down plenty of overs left - (TCup- thinking clearly under pressure). He then hits the ball hard to mid off and calls a run. A great piece of fielding and a direct hit results and Devon are all out in the 41st over only needing 7 runs...............................................

Great match, a thriller. Either side could have won. You should be proud, as I  keep telling you. You have come a very long way this season and learnt many lessons and hopefully next time we are in this position and we will be, perhaps even next week, you will know what to do, and we will win. Not sure all the parents can stand the pressure though!
