Budleigh season takes turn for the worse

BUDLEIGH Salterton have gone from top of the table to third from bottom after a third straight defeat, this time by 35 runs at the hands of Abbotskerswell.

A points deduction for slow bowling and fielding an unregistered player in the defeat by Paignton seven days earlier hasn’t helped Budleigh’s situation.

Abbots, who have now won four of their last five starts, reached 173 for seven in their 50 overs.

It was slow going for Abbots against Adam Jones (2-26), Joel Murphy (2-30) and ex-Somerset seamer Ben Phillps (1-36) with little to hit.

Abbots were 66 for five after 30 overs and 87 for six in the 38th when Alex Birt fell to Muprhy.

Jake Dearugo put a different complexion on the game by stroking 62 not out off 77 balls as Abbots sped up.

Charlie Mitchell (12) and Hugo Whitlock (28no) helped add 86 for the last two Abbots wickets.

The game got away from Budleigh in the time it took to tumble from 60 for one to 91 for six.

Elliot Rice (29) and Jack Dart (19) gave Budleigh a start, but both fell to Matt Beasant, who went on to claim a personal best in the league of six for 32.

What Beasant started was finished off by Dearugo, who returned to knock over Murphy and Lloyd Loman as Budleigh were dispatched for 138 with nearly nine overs to go.

Acton described it as Abbots’ best win of the season, adding: “Our young team showed a lot of character and fight.

“Our top order stuttered but the middle order stepped up when needed, especially Jake DeAraugo with the help of Hugo Whitlock.

Our bowlers stayed patient and Matt Beasant was rewarded with fantastic figures. He never let the batsman settle.

“Thanks to 4 wins in our last five games we are in a really strong position to be looking for a top-half finish.

“The division is hard to call, but if we keep performing as we have over  the last few weeks then the wins will keep coming.”
