Abbots start recruiting drive for colts squads

Abbotskerswell are looking to recruit young cricketers to play in their colts’ teams for 2015 and beyond.

The club are short of numbers in particular at under-11 and under-13 age groups and are looking for youngsters from school years five to eight to help fill those teams.

New chairman, Paul Mitchell, wants to see the club continue to develop young cricketers and watch them progress to senior cricket.

“For some reason we seem to be lacking in numbers for our under-11 and 13 squads and we are keen to rectify that,” said Mitchell.

“As a club we do not want to overload the squads with numbers, but we want small squads with all youngsters being involved.

“All too often in youth cricket we see the county and district players dominate games with others not getting chances.

“We have been guilty of that in the past too but we have taken a decision that we do not want to have a win-at-all-cost colts’ set-up, just young people playing competitive cricket with smiles on their faces in a safe enviroment.

“We also have a few spaces in our under-15 age group team and ask that any boys and girls who want to come and join us to come along to our indoor training.

“We were lucky enough to receive a grant through the David Shepherd Cricket Trust and all of that money will ensure free indoor training for the youngsters.”

Abbots start their junior practice with indoor sessions at Seale Hayne on Saturday, February 21 from 4-6pm.  Sessions will be led by one of the club’s level two coaches and all sessions will be free.

The club will also run an under 10 softball team in 2015 with training starting outdoors soon after Easter for the under 10s and the Little Abbots All-stars from age 5-10.
