Garratt named as Abbots' skipper

ABBOTSKERSWELL will have a new 1st XI captain and a new chairman for their 2015 campaign following a double appointment at the club’s annual meeting.

The new captain is batsman Charlie Garratt and the new chairman is Paul Mitchell.

Garratt (pictured) who is playing for Strathdale Maristians CC in Australia this winter takes over from Richard Acton.

Acton, who has led the club for the past two seasons is working in Swindon and living in Bristol. He stood down as the commitments to skipper in 2015 would potentially prove too great.

Acton will continue to play for the club whenever commitments allow.

Garratt’’s target will be an immediate return to the Devon League A Division following last season’s disappointment of relegation.

Much-travelled Aron Owen – Torquay, South Devon, Kingskerswell - becomes 2nd XI captain. He  takes the reins from young Charlie Hill.

Hill will rightly have 1st XI aspirations after scoring heavily in the second team in 2014.

He is another Abbots player in Australia for the winter; playing for Hallora alongside Abbots team-mate Matt Beasant.

Karl Beasant, who led the 3rd XI to promotion in 2014 remains in place.

Mitchell take over from Roger Acton as club chairman, with Richard Codd as vice-chairman.

Alison Andrew has taken over Codd's previous role as club secretary.

A presentation was made at the annual meeting to outgoing chairman Roger Acton by club stalwart Andy Rose.

Rose thanked Acton for his tremendous work over the past three years, during which the structure of the club improved immensely.

A presentation of two of the old pavilion seats from Somerset's County Ground was also made to club president Tony Bowhay.

The cinema-style seats that adorned the old pavilion stand were a favourite of Bowhay’s who was often known to enjoy their comfort for an afternoon nap!

Life memberships were awarded to long-standing members and volunteers, Jim Coffey and Joe Clowes

Coffey is in Abbots’ folklore as he once took a hat-trick with the first three balls he bowled against Troon in the 1973 Village Cup regional final on Abbots’ old ground in Manor Road.

As always, new players are always welcomed at Abbotskerswell CC, at junior and senior level.  For further information, contact Paul Mitchell on 07778 017326.
