Acton named Bradninch player of year

BRADNINCH Cricket Club’s awards evening was held at Kensham Park.

Guests sat down a two-course meal prepared outside on fires by Piper’s Farm.

After the meal chairman Derrick Foan spoke passionately about the need for the club players to ‘stick with it’ after the disappointing end to the past season when an instant return to the top flight ended in failure.

Ross Acton was honoured as the 1st XI bowling award winner and he also picked up the players’ player of the year trophy.  Acton topped the A Division bowling list with 38 wickets, finishing second in the averages (11.18) behind Joel Murphy (10.26). Acton is pictured (left) receiving his award.

Dan Hardy was presented with the 1st XI batting award. He made 533 league runs at an average of 38.07 and struck 137 against Barton.

Second team skipper Bryn Jones was named 2nd XI player of the year and he also picked up the 2nd XI batting award. He made 246 runs.

Phil Chappell, who is returning to Kentisbeare next season, was named 2nd XI bowler for his 23 wickets at 14.43 each.

Fifteen-year-old Ryan Shrewsberry (pictured, below) was named the club’s most improved player and Joe Webb was awarded with the fielding honour.

Steve Birley won the clubman award and his 15-year-old son William was named young player of the year.

There were three lifetime services to the club awards presented, handed out by president Roy Nott to Mark Stanbury, Chris Dean and Simon Bailey.

Bailey recently moved back to his family roots in Yorkshire due to illness and he travelled down by train the day before to be part of the awards evening.

Bailey was also presented with the Dick Fogden Trophy, the presentation made by the late club stalwart’s widow Jane. The Dick Fogden Trophy is awarded for outstanding service to the club cause.
