Clyst skipper taking it game at a time

ALPHINGTON have to pick up the pieces against Shaldon this Saturday after tumbling to an 83-run defeat against Clyst Hydon.

The Alphas had hoped to be up among the frontrunners this season following relegation with South Devon last term, but are lagging behind in sixth place 46 points shy of the promotion places.

Clyst trotted along to 260 for nine in 45 overs with Dhanuja Haturusingha top scoring on 102.

Alphington were convinced they had the Sri Lankan caught behind on nought, but the umpire said not out and they had to get on with the game.

Javed Mamhood’s seamers brought him four wickets for 56 runs and the reliable Andy Wilson had three for 22.

Alphington were all out for 177 in rely – Mamhood top scoring on 69.

The wickets were shared around with three for Kevin Sercombe and two for Haturusingha.

Hydon are 41 points behind second-placed Ipplepen, but skipper Ian Sutton isn’t looking too hard at the size of the deficit.

He preferred to savour the win over Alphington which was down to more than just Haturusingha’s ton.

It was a really good win due to a real team performance,” said Sutton.

“Dhanuja got the big score which we've been lacking so far, but everyone chipped in and we built partnerships.

“In the field it was probably the best we've fielded in a long time, taking all the chances the came and keeping the pressure on.

“And everyone got wickets, which was very satisfying.

“Going forward, there is already a big gap between the top two (South Devon and Ipplepen) and the rest. All we can do is keep winning and see if we can close it.”

Alphas’ skipper Stuart Shaw said Hydon didn’t see his team at their best and warned Shaldon to expect the backlash.

“Six of our first-choice team couldn’t play, but nearly everyone is back this Saturday and I am expecting a response against Shaldon,” said Shaw.
