Shaw wants promotion push

ALPHINGTON have asked Stuart Shaw to return as captain for the season ahead as they look to establish themselves as promotion contenders again.

The Alphas finished third from bottom last season – comfortably clear of doomed Dartington and Axminster, but hardly inspiring stuff. Two wins wasn’t a great return.

It was hard at times, but worthwhile according to Shaw, who will be captaining the side for the third time.

Having been back and forth between the A and B Divisions several times in recent seasons, the management wants to stop being a yo-yo club and that means finding stability of selection.

“Over the past two seasons we have introduced four-five young players to the side, and I feel this season they will play a big part in our final standing,” said Shaw.

“Add to the youth we have match-winning players like Paul James and Alvin Pollard I am hoping for a good, positive season.”

New players on board at the Chronicles include Ben Ireson, a keeper-batter from Newton St Cyres and Neil Maunder.

Maunder, a medium-quick bowler, played in Bristol last year for Long Ashton. Both players will feature in the first team squad.
