Holman and Thompson both hit half-centuries

ROB Holman and Matt Thompson both hit half-centuries as Devon made a competitive 234 for seven in the 345-over friendly against the Devon Lions at Axminster.

An opening stand of 46 between Barney Huxtable and Holman ended when Huxtable risked a single to Lions captain Will Murray and was run-out by a direct hit.

Holman and Thompson then added 133 for the second wicket with Holman first to his half-century in 52 deliveries.

The partnership ended when Holman went after the off-spin of Max Curtis and hit the ball straight up in the air.

Jason Hall was waiting when the ball came down to send Holman back for 63 off 96 balls including 11 boundaries.

Thompson went two runs late for 59, teased down the track by Curtis and stumped by a distance.

Two more wickets went in quick succession – Seb Benton caught in the country and Luke Bess to another Murray run-out - as Devon drifted from 179 for one to 193 for five.

Liam Lewis perked the scoring up with a bright and breezy 29 off 26 balls he. He hit Matt Plowman down the ground for a six and was bowled next ball having another swing.

The Lions bowlers struggled at times to get their line right – sending down more than three extra overs in wides – and were punished a times for bowling with too much width.

Curtis, who has recently left North Devon for pastures new at Exmouth, was the pick of the bowlers with two for 28 from nine overs.

Plowman, none for 35 in his first stint, had four more overs at the end and removed Lewis and Peter Bradley to finish with two for 47.
