Olonga heads star-studded cast at Blundell's benefit game

SOME big cricket names from the not-so-distant past will be showing off their skills at Blundell’s School (above) tomorrow (Sunday) in a charity game.

The match between a Celebrity XI and a Blundell’s Invitation XI is in aid of the Royal National Children’s Foundation.

Amongst those playing will be Henry Olonga, the former Zimbabwe fast bowler, who is now pursuing a career as a singer, artist and photographer.

Olonga (left) will be singing to players and spectators during the tea interval.

Former Somerset trio Rob Turner, Nick Folland (right) and Steffan Jones will be in the Blundell’s XI, which also includes some current pupils, staff and old boys.

The 40-over match starts at 11.30am and cricket is just part of the entertainment.

The day’s events will include a barbecue, music, Olonga the singing cricketer and a raffle.

Music from Steel Swing will provide a calypso background to the match

Spectators will have the chance to meet the cricketers over a barbecue lunch (£10 a person) or traditional cricket tea, when the  raffle, for prizes such as cricket bats signed by the England team and shirts signed by the New Zealand team, will be drawn.

There is no charge to watch or for tea but donations are invited in aid of RNCF, a charity that helps young people who have suffered trauma, tragedy or neglect by providing boarding school places where they can benefit from the  high levels of pastoral care, individual attention, sense of community and education.

Nicola Huggett, the head at Blundell’s, said: ‘We are thrilled we have been chosen to host this event as it allows us to actively show our support for the excellent work of the charity as well as enabling us to enjoy some first class cricket.

“Although we cannot guarantee the weather, we can guarantee the warmth of the welcome that spectators and players will receive.”
