Kingdon man of match in Bovey cup triumph

SUNDAY, AUGUST 29

BOVEY Tracey swept to victory by over Bradninch by 59 runs in the Tony Pryce Sports Devon Cup final at Plympton.

With the major league issues already cut and dried – Sidmouth the champions, Exeter and Braunton for the drop – attention turned to the 40-over competition.

Bovey were all out for 161 in the last of their 40 overs – opener Andy Kingdon making 54 – then Faisal Iqbal took three wickets and there were two each for Kingdon, Ryan Bougourd and Peter Bradley as Bradnich were shot out for 102 in reply.

Having been 62 for one in reply – Tim Piper (25) and Haydn Murray (26) – it was a disappointing performance by the Bradninch batters.

They lost the game in the time it took to go from 77 for three to 86 for nine as a succession of batsmen got out, either to Kingdon (2-31) or Faisal Iqbal (3-18).

Out-in-the-cold Pakistan Test batsman Iqbal, who also chipped in with 36, came a close second behind Kingdon in the summing up for Man of the Match by league vice-chairman Stuart Munday.

Bovey skipper Bradley felt Munday got the decision spot on.

“We needed someone to bat through and give us a base to launch from in the later overs – and Andy did that,” said Bradley.

“Andy made a massive contribution and with him staying steady at one end when Faisal went in he was able to raise the tempo with some quick runs.”

   Bovey Tracey 161 (A Kingdon 54, F Iqbal 36; G Chappell 3-24), Bradninch 102 (T Piper 25, H Murray 26; F Iqbal 3-18, A Kingdon 2-31). Bovey bt Bradninch by 59 runs.
