C Division - Defeat was wake-up call for South Devon

SOUTH Devon skipper Ali Wright said last Saturday’s defeat by Alphington might have been a timely wake-up call.

South Devon lost by for runs to Alphington and dropped down to second in the table.

Wright said the last two performances – Ottery away was the other – were a reminder South Devon can’t expect to win games without putting the work in.

“Ottery was a bit too close for comfort and Alphington were better on the day tha us,” said Wright.

“Our bowling hasn't been supported by the top order in the last couple of weeks, and that's what we need to improve.

“Our ground fielding wasn't up to the usual standards either. This is a big wake- up call for us, but I'm confident we'll learn the lessons and get straight back to winning ways against Civil Service & Roborough.

Ipplepen, who are the new leaders, are away to Ottery.

Alphington, the only side to beat South Devon this term, are at home to Dartington.

Skipper Stuart Shaw felt he had his strongest side out against South Devon and for the first time this term is unchanged.

He added: “We had a good result last week, but I still believe we haven’t produced our best performance yet.

“We have a very strong batting line up and when the batting clicks we will be hard to beat.

“My front line bowlers - Andy Wilson and Tom Bath - have consistently bowled well and taken early wickets.

“With the best spin bowler in the league, and arguably one of the best all-rounders in Paul James to come on, it gives us a good chance to defend our total or restrict teams to a low score.”

If Dartington & Totnes could find a streak of consistency they wouldn’t be 43 points behind second-placed South Devon.

Shaw is wary of D&T, even though Alphas have rolled them over once this season.

“They have some very good players in their side and skipper Ryan Stevenson is one of them, said Shaw.

“Ryan leads from the front with bat and ball and knows how to get the best out of his team.

“Last time out we won a very low-scoring game and am expecting another tough one.

“With the confidence we will take from last week, I am hoping we will come away with a positive result.”
