Corns breeze into cup last eight

CORNWOOD put their lPremier Division relegation worries to one side with an eight-wicket win over Bradninch to steam into the last eight of the Tolchards Devon Cup and set up a meeting with arch rivals Plymouth

Bradninch were going great guns at 103 for one after 23 overs with Greg Maher on 50 and Jack Horton almost level with him on 45.

Then the wheel fell off!

Maher got out to Andy Bees (2-26) followed by Ryan Rickard running out Jack Horton, the former Plymstock player assisting Bradninch this term.

Dan Hardy, who had taken a ton off Barton in an A Division game the day before was next out as Bradninch dipped to 127 for four.

Rickard and Jackson Thompson against his former club then scythed through the Bradninch lower order.

Rickard took three for three, Thompson had two for seven and Byron Langley claimed the odd one out as Bradninch lost six wickets for 17 runs on the way to 144 all out.

Thompson missed out with the bat – he hit the first ball from Ross Acton for four and got out to the next one – but a stand of 63 between Ben Warren (49) and Aaron Richards (72no) put Cornwood on course for the semi-finals.

Warren went caught behind on 67, but Steve Lambert (18no) joined 17-year-old debutant Richards to see Cornwood the rest of the way there.

Nick Goodliffe, the Cornwood chairman of selectors, said Richards wasn’t the only youngster to impress in the win.

“Fourteen year old Matthew Petherbridge has been performing consistently well for our 2nd XI and deserved a chance,” said Goodliffe.

“He bowled his eight overs tidily, unfortunately without reward, but certainly wasn’t fazed by the occasion.

“Aaron Richards wholeheartedly deserved the man of the match accolade, firstly for his wicket-keeping performance and also for his faultless batting performance.

“Skipper Jason Hall threw Aaron straight in at number three and he seized the challenge, batting through from third ball of the innings to the end.”

The home side gave first senior competitive starts to three 15-year-olds in Will Birley, Ryan Shrewsberry and Owen Buxton

The Corns entertain Plymouth at Oak Park this Sunday.

Quarter-final draw: Cornwood v Plymouth, Plympton v Exeter, Paignton v Barton, Heathcoat v Sidmouth

Semi-finals: Sunday, July 20. Final at Torquay CC, Sunday, August 24.
