Barton and Paignton through in cup

BARTON swept Brixham aside by six wickets en-route to a place in the second round of the Tolchards Devon KO Cup.

Rain meant a shortened game – down to 21 overs from the usual 40 – and Brixham laboured to 74 for three.

Only Joe Hyde and Tim Robinson with a brace of 17s made much headway against some miserly bowling by Barton.

Meanest of all was Tom Porter with one for seven from six overs.

Barton had the runs knocked off inside 18 overs, thanks largely to stand of 44 for the second wicket between Denovan Ekstraal (28) and Steve Lewis (18).

Matt Parsons (2-23) nipped out Ekstraal and Lewis on 64, leaving Damon Calland and Porter to chip away the last few runs.

Barton’s reward is a home game against Tavistock in round two.

PAIGNTON went through to round two, and a date with Premier champions Exmouth, thanks to a walkover.

Axminster were due to visit Queens Park, but withdrew from the competition due to team-raising problems.

“We had a number of lads playing football and some of the younger ones have exams and couldn’t get a strong enough side out to go down there,” said Axminster skipper Tristan Wakeley.

“It was a shame as the cup was a competition we had targeted to have a run in this season.”

Second round draw: Bradninch v Cornwood, Torquay v Plymouth, Plympton v Bovey Tracey, Budleigh v Exeter, Paignton v Exmouth, Barton v Tavistock, Ivybridge v Heathcoat, Chudleigh v Sidmouth. Ties to be played on Sunday, June 8.
