Devon and Cornwall beaten by weather
Day One | Day Two

DEVON and Cornwall bowed to the inevitable after one deluge too many and abandoned their Minor Counties Championship game at St Austell at lunch on the third day.

There was no play at all on the first day due to overnight rain – and three hours were lost on day two due to bad weather and poor light.

Day three didn’t start well as fog prevented a prompt start at 10.30am.

Two more showers finally convinced Devon captain Chris Bradley and opposite number Tom Sharp to pack up and go home!

In the cricket which was played, Devon totalled 294 for eight in 81 of their 90 overs with Rob Holman (79) just pipping Matt Thompson (77no) for top scorer.

Cornwall seamer Alex Smeeth picked up four for 62.

Devon, who are out of the MCCA Cup so don’t play this Sunday, return to the fray on July 8 when they commence a three-day game against Herefordshire at Sidmouth.

Cornwall’s next outing, also on July 8, is against Wiltshire at Falmouth.

Devon 298-8 (R J Holman 79, M W Thompson 77no, J J Bess 34, P Bradley 35; A G Smeeth 4-60). Match abandoned: Devon 7 pts, Cornwall 7.
