Devon Under 12's v Dorset Under 12's - Match Report
The best way to bounce back from a poor performance against Somerset would be to put in a strong all round team effort against Dorset. This was what the manager and coach requested and the team duly delivered!

Devon lost the toss and were asked to bat in overcast conditions at Axminster Cricket Club. Devon started reasonably well getting to 61 before their 2nd wicket fell, Sam Lathwell – Braunton CC (31) attempting to hit his fourth boundary of the over, unfortunately chipping a high full toss to mid-wicket the second man out .

Further contributions from Jake Reddick – Exeter CC (37) and some excellent clean hitting from Alfie Huxtable – Braunton CC (38) progressed the score to 157 for 7 with 13 overs remaining in the innings. Huxtable had been struggling for form, but his new position in the order seemed to work as he dominated the Dorset attack striking 6 boundaries in his quick fire innings.

Dan Pyle – Ottery St. Mary (29) and Will Thompson – Heathcoat CC (54no) then built a stable partnership adding 61 for the 8th wicket. A final flourish from Dan Goodey – Plymouth and Thompson elevated Devon to with a single of 250 at the close of innings.

The Dorset innings struggled to gain any momentum with wickets falling at regular intervals. The Dorset number 3 the only batsman to cause any trouble for the Devon bowlers.

Lessons learnt from the Devon innings allowed Devon’s captain – Will Thompson to take the pace of the ball using two spinners effectively to kill off any hope of a fight back from the visitors. Alfie Huxtable rounded off his best match to date with 3 wickets and Tody Codd’s off-spinners bagged a brace. Dan Goodey and Dan Pyle both took 2 wickets each to complete a well deserved victory.

For the manager and coach this was a great all-round team performance with everyone contributing. The batting was outstanding in periods and our fielding was better, but there is still room for improvement! Well done!

Axminster, as always, made us very welcome! Les Haynes was his wonderful charming self and we extend our thanks to everyone at the club who made us feel at home.
