Bovey win low-scoring affair against Exeter

EXETER’S hit-and-miss league form continued with a two-wicket defeat in a low-scoring affair at Bovey Tracey.

Tom Viljoen’s 28 was one of only two double-figure scores in Exeter’s total of 107 all out. Ben Green (14) had the other.

Viljoen’s demise at 86 for six was the beginning of the end for Exeter, whose last five wickets went for 21 runs.

Former Devon spin bowler and captain Chris Bradley took four of them, which suggests he his getting over the shoulder problems that have plagued him for a couple of seasons.

There were two wickets each for Peter Bradley and Malcolm Lake.

Bovey found runs almost as hard to acquire and at one stage on the chase were 85 for seven – hardly a winning position!

Lake had made 21 and Sam Wyatt-Haines 34, but it was only bits and pieces from the rest as Dom Bess (3-27) and Ben Green (5-40) kept chipping away at the wickets.

Bovey were 96 for eight when Chris Bradley was caught behind off Green, leaving Sam Hickenbottom and Nathan Roberts in the middle with last man Ryan Bougourd to come.

Hickenbottom stayed there while Roberts took Bovey over the line with an unbeaten 15.

Exeter skipper Miles Lenygon had no complaints, saying: “We felt 150 would have been a very good score.

“The pitch was a good one in that it offered lots for spin and seam.

“Two very decent blowing attacks performed well.”

Opposite number Andy Fairbairn had a bit more to say.

“It was a good result for us against a talented, young Exeter team,” said Fairbairn.

“We bowled well throughout their innings with the Bradleys getting six wickets between them.

“Chris's shoulder isn't right, but he has now bowled 20 overs in the last two games, taken five wickets for very few runs and it's great for us to have him bowling so well.

“Sam Wyatt-Haines batted very maturely at the top of the innings, which was crucial in the scheme of things.”

On Exeter he added: “Ben Green impressed me a lot last year and just keeps getting better and better. I hope he stays fit because he has got a lot of talent with the bat and the ball.

“Dom Bess also bowled well for them and it's great to see two young lads doing so well in the Devon League.”
