Exmouth blown away by North Devon pacemen

EXMOUTH skipper Richard Baggs said North Devon should have been among the title chasers this season after the way they thrashed his side by 117 runs.

Somerset staffman Jamie Overton belted 69 off 56 balls as North Devon accelerated from 66 for four to 197 for nine.

After former Exmouth batter Barney Huxtable had been in and out for 21 and Rob Ayre had made 29, Overton held the middle order together.

The key stand was one of 71 for the sixth wicket between Overton and Matt Westaway (13).

While the batting was adequate, it was the bowling that blew Exmouth away.

Aussie speedster Jack Pudney (pictured) took five for 35 bowling eight overs on the reel, Overton had four for 31 at the other end and former Warwickshire paceman Tom Allin knocked over Jamie Tapper to end it all.

North Devon bowled too straight and too fast for Exmouth. There were three caught behinds, three lbws, three bowleds and a caught at slip.

Pudney set the tone by having opener Sandy Allen caught in the grabbers by Huxtable first ball.

Exmouth were all out for 80 in just 15-4 overs – Tapper and David Lye making 17 each to save them from total humiliation after they had been 19 for five.

Said Baggs: “We were blown away by a minor First Class and very good Minor County bowler.

“North Devon should be ashamed to be fifth and not really challenging as they haev some top class, very fast bowling

“A couple of the North Devon guys said that's by far the best they have bowled and that's what's been happening to us this season.”

Exmouth, the defending champions, are going to finish fourth or fifth having failed to live up to last season’s standards.

Baggs said a period of reflection will be followed by some squad strengthening in an attempt to wrestle the title back from Sidmouth in 2015.

“We all have to have a big look at ourselves as there have been far too many soft dismissals and people not valuing their wickets enough - and it simply cannot happen again,” said Baggs.

“We will regroup for next year and add a couple bowlers as our seam attack lacks bite.

“We have the batters to do it and out spin attack is decent.”
