CricketForce at Exmouth

FRIDAY, APRIL 15

A BRILLIANT weekend of sunshine saw volunteers flock to Exmouth to take part in the national NatWest Cricket Force event where clubs all over the country take part in a self-help scheme to improve their club facilities.

Exmouth, who won the national OSCA at Lords in 2009 for its efforts with the weekend, saw over 90 members, as well as staff of Nat West Bank, turn up at the Maer Ground over the three days and undertake a wide variety of works, including decorating of the pavilion, scorebox and sight screens, erection of the Devon CCC marquee and repairs to benches, doors and hedge boundaries.

Many of the materials were donated by local businesses who continue to be strong sponsors of the Club.

It was not all hard work and volunteers enjoyed pasties, a barbecue and a cream tea as well as taking part in a raffle, to which more than 50 prizes had been donated by many more local companies and members.

Club Chairman, Richard Butler, acknowledged all this local support and thanked the companies who had donated so generously despite the difficult economic times.

A further benefit of the weekend is the opportunity it gives members, young and old to socialise and find out more about the workings of the cub.

The whole event was organised by Bryon Fishlock and John Barnard who also thanked everyone for their support.

Other activity at the Club at the weekend saw the successful launch of colts training to which more than 50 colts attended the new sessions organised by head coach James Hope.

Butler said, “When I see the effort put in by members all whom have busy schedules it is quite overwhelming. We have saved the club thousands of pounds this weekend and the work will continue week on week with our dedicated and professional band of volunteers. If things go as well with the cricket then we are in for a good year”.

This weekend sees the start of the season with two friendly matches at the Maer against Torquay and Woodbury as well as the opening of the completely re-vamped popular tea hut which is under the new management of Percolapps, who specialise in quality coffees and home-produced hot and cold food.
