Dumplings draw with Free Foresters

IN a close contest at Seaton against Free Foresters the Devon Dumplings fell just 11 runs short of their victory target of 278 with just one wicket left.

Batting first the Foresters lost an early wicket as Chard seamer Todd Scott induced a nick to keeper John Goodwin, Dumplings skipper for the day.

A good partnership then developed between Robin Jones and Peter Deakin until, when the score was 119, Jones was bowled by Chris Kelmere.

Deakin went on to score 78 and the final stages of the Foresters innings owed much to a belligerent 71 not out from George Sandbach before the declaration came at 277 for 5.

It was hard work for the Dumplings bowlers with Scott Todd getting through 19 pacy overs for his well deserved 3 for 73. Chris Kelmere had 2 for 63 off 17 and Exeter’s Peter Hensor bowled 14 economical overs for 44.

The Dumplings innings got off to a bad start as veteran opener Andrew Parr was adjudged lbw without scoring.

John Meredith pushed the rate along with a purposeful 31 in a stand of 52 with Exeter clubmate Cameron Grainger.

After tea Grainger rode his luck somewhat to score 76 and Graham White contributed a useful 25. When the last 20 overs were called the Dumplings still needed 140 but Kelmere and Todd quickly had the asking rate down to five an over, Todd hitting one enormous six out of the ground.

The fall of Kelmere for 50 and Todd for 33 returned the initiative to the Foresters as four wickets went for just 22 runs, but Abbotskerswell’s Noah Tobias notched 17 not out as the last pair safely negotiated the last three overs to achieve an honourable draw.

Free Foresters 277-5 dec (Deakin 78, Sandbach 71no, Jones 55, Todd 3-73, Kelmere 2-63), Devon Dumplings 267-9 (Grainger 76, Kelmere 50, Meredith 31, Todd 33, White 25). Match Drawn.
