Heathcoat's winning run comes to end

HEATHCOAT’S winning run in the Premier Division came to a halt when they lost on run rate to bottom side Cornwood.

Qassim Adams bludgeoned a second successive century as Heathcoat amassed 265 for eight in 50 overs.

Cornwood’s target was reduced to 207 to win in 39 overs after a 40-minute break for rain – and they could not have cut it finer.

When skipper Jason Hall was dismissed two balls into the final over, Cornwood needed four to win.

Ninth-wicket pair Elliot Staddon and Matt Butterworth tipped and ran to clinch victory off the last ball.

Cornwood last won a league game on the opening day of the season when they routed Sandford by 123 runs.

Heathcoat visit Plymouth this Saturday looking for a win to keep Sandford and Cornwood a respectable distance behind them.

Adams went in at 61 for two and batted through to the end, facing 107 balls. He hit nine fours and the same number of sixes in his 32.

Along the way there were stands of 43 with Will Thompson – he made seven – and 48 with Jamie Drew.

Wickets were hard to come by, but Hall took two for 39 in 10 tidy overs and Jackson Thompson had three for 55.

Thompson and Ben Warren got the Corns chasing with a stand of 77, then Mark  Horwell (18) added another 42 to get the total up to 119.

Thompson fell lbw to Jack Menheneott  for 72, but the runs carried on coming from Matt Skeemer (48) before he was sixth out at 191.

Menheneott (3-42) and Adams (2-39) kept the pressure on right to the end of an absorbing contest.
