Exeter early leaders in Division One

EXETER lead Division One of the Island Cricket Exeter T20 league after round two of matches, the first week of the league having been completely washed out by rain!

The city side defeated Shobrooke Park after posting 170-9 from 20 overs. Steve Morris (43) top scored, with good support from Blake Reed (35) as the Shobrooke wickets were shared around.

In reply, the home side were never really up with the rate - despite Richard Durrant’s 43 - finishing on 127-8 when the overs ran out

Thorverton defeated Clyst Hydon by 10 runs in a close game at the Station Ground. The home side got off to a flyer thanks to Paul Fielder (42) before being pegged back by Clyst’s overseas spin trio of Dhanuja Haturusingha (4-28), Tij Jhaveri (3-13) and Clinton Lewis (2-20).

George Greed batted down the order and made 30no as the Thors finished on 144-9.

Clyst’s opening pair of Ian Sutton (46) and Toby Devine (32) put on 56 before Sutton was brilliantly caught in the deep by Harry Choules. The visitors then became bogged down by tight spells from James Maxwell and Christian Cabburn and, despite having wickets in hand on the chase, finished on 134-2.

Alphington lead the way in Division Two after victory at Exeter’s colts side. Exeter batted first and scored a useful-looking 135-6, with runs from Harry Skinner (39) and Fergus Vinnels (32) against Alphas skipper James Knight (2-27).

Opener Nathan Bright then anchored the visitors’ chase with 58 as Alphington cruised home with nearly four overs to spare.

Close on Alphington’s heels are Topsham St. James, who defeated Exwick by 17 runs.

Topsham were bowled out for 132 by Exwick’s Steve Miles (3-18), Adam Harding (2-21) and Derek Jenkins (2-34), with runs from Matt Collins (35) and Alex Sparkes (20).

Brian Jeary then took an impressive 6-12 as Exwick were bowled out for 115 in reply. Only Todd Dove with 41 was able to offer much resistance.
