Budleigh end wait for a win as Lewdown slip into bottom two

LEWDOWN are 14 points adrift in the A Division bottom two following an eight-wicket defeat by Budleigh Salterton.

There were three-wickets each for Luke Peterson, James Burke and skipper Joel Murphy as Lewdown were skittled out for 116 in the 37th over.

Lewdown were 79 for five when Marco Marais was out for a top score of 36 and no one made more than Harry Geering with 17 after he went.

Budleigh didn’t mess about knocking off the runs and were home and dry in the 26th over.

Elliot Rice (20) and Burke (63) got Budleigh’s first 65 on the board and by the time Burke went to left-armer Ben Williams the target was nine to win and the game over.

South African all-rounder Marais was unable to bowl in the second half due to a back injury and won’t be bowling again this season.

Geering didn’t attempt to make any excuses in the wake of the defeat, saying: “We weren't good enough and haven't been for half the season so far.

“It's not bowling or batting or fielding it's all of it.

Now it is down to us to make something happen.

“There's a very fine line in this league between winning and losing we just need to get a win and carry the form on.”

Joel Murphy, the Budleigh skipper, said he a cracking bowling performance set up his team’s first win for a while.

“Luke Peterson and James Burke bowled quality spells and made Lewdown play 75 per cent of the time,” said Murpy.

“When you bowl that many dot balls it builds pressure on the batting sides and they lose wickets trying to move the score along.

“We managed to get our game together all-round and the chase was pretty routine thanks to Elliot and Burke.

“There is still a lot of cricket left this season and with so little between most of the teams if we can string four of five wins together we can be right up there at the end.”
