Test star Abbott drops in on Lewdown nets

LEWDOWN have had some tips from the top to take into their first season in the A Division, which opens against Budleigh Salterton.

South African Test star Kyle Abbott played Devon League cricket for Lewdown, then a D Division West club, during the 2006 season. He was 18 then and took 55 wickets at around seven runs each and averaged 85.5 with the bat.

Lewdown was a stepping stone to playing First Class cricket at home for KZN and now Dolphins.

Hampshire have signed Abbott for the summer ahead and he nipped down to see his old club during a break between games.

Harry Geering, the Lewdown skipper, said Abbott was more than welcome.

“Unfortunately, due to the weather, we haven't had any pre-season games or any nets on the tracks,” said Geering.

“So we are going into a game against what looks to be the best side in the division without the help of any practice in the middle, which is far from good.

‘The final net before the game went well with Kyle down seeing the team again. “

Ben and Jack Williams miss the first game but otherwise Lewdown are as they were last season.

Marco Marais – who topped 1500 runs last season - is back and looking in good form, according to Geering, who added:  “All the lads are looking forward to seeing what the A Division has to offer.”
