Lions win last-over nail-biter

DEVON Lions held their nerve in a thrilling finish to beat Worcestershire Academy by four runs.

Skipper Matt Thompson hit 51 in Devon's 50-over total of 213 for eight at Wolverhampton.

Josh Mailling opened up with 23, getting Devon away to a 40-run start.

A mini collapse saw Devon slip to 43 for three and in need of a lift.

Thompson shared stands of 68 with Matt Golding (40) and 59 with Max Curtis (42) to do just that.

There was a handy stand of 38 unbroken for the ninth wicket between Hal Kerton and Cameron Evans, which ultimately made the difference between winning and losing.

Worcester got down to the last over needing 11 to win with two wickets left.

It was quite a chase at times with the Academy side always there or thereabouts run-rate wise, but never ahead of the clock for long.

The last 10 overs arrived with Worcestershire on 161 for five and just about on course to win it.

Mailing came on for five overs from one end and got through them for a miserly 17 runs.

Rob Bennett returned for four from the other and plucked out a couple of wickets to finish with three for 39 with an over to go.

Matt Kidd kept the last over to a run a ball for the first five, leaving six to win off the last ball, then served up a yorker to finish as Worcestershire were held to 209 for eight.

A number of Devon’s young Lions did their prospects no harm at all, among them spinner Will Squire, whose 10 overs for 25 runs kept a lid on Worcestershire in the first 30.

Devon 213-8 (M Thompson 51, M Curtis 42, M Golding 40; R Brown 3-31), Worcester Academy 209-8 (O West 50, G Rhodes 40; R Bennett 3-39). Devon bt Worcs by 4 runs.
