Brockman Cup final - 1998

LUSTLEIGH cruised to a hat-trick of Brockman Cup final wins with a 37-run victory over South Devon in last night's final at Torquay Recreation Ground.

The holders totalled 126 for seven in their 20 six-ball overs with skipper Steve Wright making a priceless 51 not out - bringing up his half-century by hitting Pat Duke for six off the last ball of the innings.

Only Peter Bartlett (28) joined Wright in double figures and for long time South Devon seemed to be on top with Steve West (2-30) and Colin Shute (2-41) keeping the runs down until Wright cut loose in the last four overs.

South Devon lost their way after a promising start with the spinners of Gerry Starling and Chris Sims tying them down for over after over.

Sims had four for 28, but Starling was the star with a six overs spell which cost just 14 runs and left South Devon needing 78 to win off the last eight overs.

It was never on and Sims then Bartlett (3-17) ran through the rest of the batting as South Devon were bowled out for 89 with two balls to go.

Lustleigh 126-7 (S Wright 51no, P Bartlett 28; S West 3-41); South Devon 89 (P Allen 33; C Sims 4-28, P Bartlett 3-17). Lustleigh bt South Devon by 37 runs.
