Promotion not the only thing that matters says Murphy

BUDLEIGH Salterton skipper Joel Murphy doesn’t think missing out on promotion would be the ‘end of the world’ for his club, even though they are in the thick of the shake-up.

The Otters entertain Brixham tomorrow fourth in the table, just nine points behind second-placed Plympton and 15 behind leaders Bradninch.

With third-placed Paignton to play next Saturday and Bradninch on the last day of the season, Bradninch have every opportunity to make up ground.

Murphy isn’t scared of promotion, but he isn’t afraid of another year in the A Division either.

“I know it isn’t the view of some of the other teams around us, but not being promoted isn’t the end of the world,” said Murphy (pictured).

“A few of us who were in the Premier Division last season would like another crack at it, because you like to test yourselves against the best. That’s natural.

“But I haven’t forgotten what a poor season we had last year either, and how much better things are this season.

“I am not going to put undue pressure on the players by saying this game is ‘make of break’, or that game is ‘must-win’.

“If we find ourselves in the top two and going up, then we will deal with it.

“If not, we will have had an enjoyable season and will come back next year for another go.”

Murphy said there was more to league cricket than the holy grail of the Premier Division, such as sustainability.

“I can think of clubs where three or four players are being paid to play, yet the clubs are struggling for money and their facilities leave plenty to be desired,” said Murphy.

“I am not suggesting clubs shouldn’t have paid players, you shouldn’t be paying out money you can’t afford.

“I am pleased to say Budleigh live within their means. Financially we are doing okay and our playing budget is sustainable.

“The important thing isn’t necessarily perceived status, but the long-term health and future of your club.”
