2000 - Hat-trick for Paignton

PAIGNTON defeated South Devon by 23 runs to clinch a third successive win in the final of the Narracott Cup.

The holders were always in the driving seat after piling up 144 for three in their 15 eight-ball overs.

South Devon 52 for three with seven overs to go, tried to up the tempo in the second half of their innings, but had left too much to do in too little time after getting bogged down against Andy Wakeham early on.

South Devon had the target down to 41 off the last three overs and the way Xavier Page-Dove and Darryll Eley were smashing the bowling around they still had a chance.

Page-Dove got over a slow start to make 31 and, urged along by Eley, started to play his shots with Jon Barnes (0-28 off two overs) coming off worst.

But Paignton left-armer Rogers nipped out Page-Dove with his first ball, bowled Eley five balls later and in the same over a pinpoint throw from Simon Edwards ran out Pat Duke. Game over.

Rogers bowled the final over with 28 needed to win and picked up a third wicket when he clean bowled Brian Allen.

Edwards top-scored for Paignton with 63, reaching his 50 in nine overs, as South Devon struggled to bowl a consistent line or length.

Paignton 144-3 (S Edwards 63, J Barnes 33no, N Robinson 29), South Devon 120-8 (X Page-Dove 31, G Andrews 24, D Eley 15; A Wakeham 2-17, L Rogers 3-2).
