Heathcoat turn tables on Hatherleigh

NORTH DEVON LEAGUE – WEEK 16

Latest Tables

THE weather ruined the top-flight action with one game unable to start, another being ended prematurely and just one able to go the distance.

The game to start and finish was the at Knightshayes, Tiverton, where bottom of the table Heathcoat defeated Hatherleigh by 98 runs.

A fourth defeat of the season may well be terminal to Hatherleigh’s title hopes whilst a fifth win of the term for Heathcoat means they could yet avoid a bottom berth finish – something they face only because of the points they have had deducted this term for player registration problems. Heathcoat’s results are as good as anybodies in the top flight this term and, had they not had 62 points deducted to date, they would be sat on the heels of the leaders instead of languishing at the foot of the table!

Chris Small hit 74 to lead the Mid Devon side to 250-9 and then Martyn Williams claimed 4-34 as, Shane Dilling apart, with a knock of 42, no other visiting batsmen stuck around for long, the final Hatherleigh wicket falling on 152.

They tried to complete a 25-over game at Instow where Filleigh were the visitors. Batting first it was crash, bang wallop, as Filleigh racked up 208-3 in their 25 overs with Jaz Kalsi hitting 104 and Mark Prideaux striking 71. Dan Bowser bagged two of the three wickets to fall – he went for 46 in his five overs. Neil Bettis (19) and Alex Smith (13) were putting bat to ball and had had chalked up 49 without loss from the first four overs when the weather finally ended any hopes of the game being played to a finish.

There was not a single ball bowled in the other top flight game with Braunton calling off their fixture with Newton Tracey.

RESULTS

Filleigh 208-3 (J Kalsi 104, M Prideaux 71; D Bowser 2-46), North Devon 49-0 (N Bettis 19no, A Smith 13no) rsp – match abandoned.

Braunton versus Newton Tracey – no play rain.

Heathcoat 250-9 (C Small 74; Martin 4-34), Hatherleigh 152 (S Dilling 42; M Williams 4-34). Heathcoat (20pts) bt Hatherleigh (4) by 98 runs.

DIVISION TWO

In Division Two there was a close encounter played out at Morebath where Incorrigibles batted first, were bundled out for just 119, but won the game by four runs!

Matt Weeks (3-24), James Hope (3-25) and Ryan Bowden (2-15) shared the bulk of the wicket taking. Earlier Lee Hooper had also claimed three wickets for the hosts.

It was not quite as close at Victoria Park where Shebbear were beaten by five wickets. Ollie Wicket struck an excellent 69 but no one else stuck around with him for too long as Shebbear were bowled out for 98. Andy Bryan bagged a brace of wickets for the visitors.

Weare Giffard climbed a place into the top four off the back of a two wicket win at home to Lynton and Lynmouth who they bowled out for 190 with Paul Tuson (3-31) and Ian Jury (2-22) amongst the wickets. Josh King claimed 4-24 for the hosts who then sat back and watched Allin at work, Dan Barrett chipped in with a knock of 35.

Three times the teams left the field and three times they battled back on, at Newton Tracey, before the elements eventually brought proceedings to a premature end. Visiting Sandford II batted first and were restricted to 186-8, led there by Pete Whitby (47) and Gary Abdul (27). Andy Chatham (3-26) and John Brewer (2-31) were the principle wicket takers for Newton Tracey who were in all sorts of bother on 44-7 when the rain closed in for the fourth and final time. Ashley Baker was the chief wicket taker for Sandford II. Baker sent down nine overs and returned the splendid figures of 5-10.

The previous day Newton Tracey II had boosted their promotion hopes with a 94 run win at home to Bratton Fleming in a game dominated by Bill Sobey. The mornings top two won, with the quickest result of the day coming at leaders Belstone who bowled out visiting Victoria Park II for jut 45 and knocked them off for the loss of a single wicket.

Second placed Petrockstowe also won but their game with visiting North Molton was a much closer affair.

Lewis Harris (16), Lee Cockwill (15) and Steve Cox (13) helped the home side limp to an all out total of 79.

In conditions that favoured the bowlers throughout, Rob Ayre (3-16), James Tapp (3-24) and Philip Ley (3-24) claimed the wickets.

However, Tapp (22) apart, there was little else to come from the visiting batsmen and they were bowled out for 71 to leave Petrockstowe winners by eight runs! Lewis Harris completed a fine all-round effort with 2-7, Nigel Cockwill claimed 2-5 and Jack Morgan finished with 2-21.

The game at Barnstaple and Pilton II where Westleigh were due to visit, fell to the weather.

DIVISION FIVE

Just the one game was played in the basement Division although one other was not played owing to Cheriton Fitzpaine becoming the latest side this term to be unable to field an eleven and so their game at Bratton Fleming II had to be cancelled. No play either at Bishop Nympton where then weather prevented any play with Heathcoat III.

They did play at Nomansland where Barnstaple and Pilton III were nine wicket winners. Gary Say top scored with 49 for the Witheridge side who were restricted to 133-9, passed for the loss of just one wicket by Barum.

Ilfracombe replace Filleigh at top of table, led from front by skipper Jamie Sutton with 4 wickets and 51no.   Could have been a lot worse for Filleigh if Jason Newman had not dropped Popplewell when on 10.  However Ifracombe held everything else and ran out comfortable winners.
