Huxtable sends Tracey to first defeat

DIVISION ONE

In the top flight Newton Tracey tasted defeat for the first time this season, beaten by 29 runs at home by Braunton in a game reduced to 35-overs per side owing to the weather. Barney Huxtable was the all-round match winner for the visitors as he top scored with 91 and Ian Roberts weighed in with 58 in a Braunton total of 215-8. Huxtable then claimed 3-45 as the hosts were bowled out for 186 with only Martin Gear making much of an impression with 54.

North Devon struck a resounding eight wicket win over visiting Heathcoat. The Mid Devon side batted first and were restricted to 176-8 with Chris Small left high and dry, unbeaten on 97 at the close. Matt Hague chipped in with 20 as Tom Ansell took 3-31 and Dan Bowser claimed 2-26. Bowser then hit 70 before being trapped leg before by Small as he and Glen Querl (76no), saw the Instow men to a comfortable victory.

DIVISION TWO

Ollie Wicket opened the batting for Shebbear in their home game with Weare Giffard and he was finally out with just four overs to be bowled for a mighty 232 that included twenty two 6’s. Charlie Neilson chipped in with 90 and the home side closed on 364-3. Weare Giffard managed 186-5 in their reply. Basement side Shobrooke Park banked only a second win of the term with a five wicket home success over Victoria Park. The game at Beaford where Incorrigbles were due to appear, fell to a waterlogged surface, that the second game running that the Witheridge side have suffered a washout as their Bank Holiday Monday game at Lynton and Lynmouth met a similar fate.

DIVISION THREE

The mornings top two met and it produced a run-fest at Sampford Peverell where another superb batting strip prepared by Fred Harding saw Halberton and visiting Bratton Fleming rack up 675 runs for the loss of just ten wickets. Batting first Dan Coles hit his third century of the league season, scoring exactly 100, whilst John Chilcott struck 96 – the pair putting on 178 for the first wicket. Tom Sambrook later plundered an unbeaten 87 off just 44 deliveries and the hosts closed on 359-6. Oliver Hunt bagged a brace for the visiting side and then hit the top score in the reply with a knock of 95. Steven Ayre hit an unbeaten 74 and Paddy Dartnoll scored 49. Joe Wadham returned the best home bowling figures with 1-26 as the valiant run chase ended on 315-4. The result sees Halberton stay top of the table.

Newton Tracey II kept up their challenge with a seven wicket win at Sandford II where John Turner took 4-25 to bowl out the Creedy Park side for 187. Bradley Discombe (54), Chris Theedom (32) and Ben Hancock (32), top scored for the Mid Devon side. John Walmsley then hit 63 as he and Graham Persson (48) led the visitor’s side to the win. Ash Baker bagged a brace of wickets for the hosts.

Harvey James (4-12) and Jack Wakeley (3-19), combined with great affect for Filleigh II to bundle out visiting Holsworthy for a meagre 54 inside 22 overs. Josh Curtis struck 15 of the visitors runs but Ieuan Davies hit a six to bring up a ten wicket win with the other not out batsmen being young McCauley Harrison-Hooton with 29.

Bude bagged only their second win of the season with a 69 run success at home to Bideford II. Ben Purcell (76), Warren Rumble (57) and Mark McManus (53), combined to see Bude to 263-7. Fred King took 2-34 for the visitors who were then led to a total of 194 by Paul Shepherd (44). Andrew De Rosa was the most successful home bowler with 3-28.

DIVISION FOUR

Lynton and Lynmouth II claimed their first win of the season as they defeated visiting Barnstaple and Pilton II by six wickets. Dave Orr (87) and Martin Ash (52), saw Barum to 252-6. Pete Druce claimed 2-22 for the home side who were then led to a comfortable victory by a superb unbeaten century from Lawrence May who ended with 143 to his name. Barnaby Hayward was the other unbeaten bat at the close on 35.

Belstone were seven wicket winners at Braunton Kelsey where they bundled the hosts out for just 70. Gary Brook (18) and Andrew Parker (12), were the only home batsmen to make any sort of headway as Tom Foggerty (3-15), Callum Mallett (2-2), Tom Boother (2-5) and John Parsons (2-16) joined forces. Scott Tremain then hit 36 as Belstone lost just three wickets in the victory stroll. Young Taylor Latham bagged two of the wickets to fall.

Lewis Harris claimed 4-12 as Petrockstowe bowled visiting North Devon III out for 77. Bob Heaman top scored for the Instow side with 24. An unbeaten 37 from Lee Cockwill saw the hosts to victory. Dom Berry bagged two of the three wickets to fall.

Victoria Park II were beaten in a close encounter with North Molton. Andy Jeffrey (72) and Tim Lane (17) led Victoria Park to 156-8. Paul Ley (4-41) and James Tapp (3-23) claimed wickets for North Molton who sealed victory on 157-7 led there by Dominic Ford (58) and Harry Briggs (48). The Victoria Park bowlers to have most success were a pair of 15-year olds. Kieran Soper took 3-14 and Paul Schiller claimed 3-38.

DIVISION FIVE

Ilfracombe made short work of visiting Cheriton Fitzpaine, bowling them out for just 51 inside 31 overs and then requiring just eight overs to complete a seven wicket win. Nigel Crick (10) was the only Cheriton batsman into double figures as Jason Newman (3-5), Jamie Sutton (3-13), Mark Cavanagh (2-19) and Dan Brierley (1-0) claiming wickets. Brierley’s spell was one of six overs, six maidens, and one wicket! The hosts then juggled their batting order, losing three wickets in the run chase with two of them falling to Andrew Hartley. Nathan Townsend clubbed an unbeaten 26 and there was a cameo knock of 16 from his Uncle, Mark Creek, as Ilfracombe breezed to victory.

Barnstaple and Pilton III struck their very first win of the season with a 17 run victory over Bratton Fleming II. Andre Barton played the match winning all-round performance with a top score of 78 as he and Brian Roe (57no) led Barum to 186-6. Adam Paine then hit 44 and Pat Crane (43) led the run chase but 3-12 from Barton helped dismiss the visitors for 159.
