NORTH DEVON LEAGUE - WEEK SEVEN

Latest Tables

DIVISION ONE

NORTH Devon’s crown as reigning champions slipped further as they fell to a second defeat in three outings, beaten by five wickets in a thrilling contest at Instow against Newton Tracey.

The hosts batted first and were led to 231-8 by Tom Ansell (59), Neil Bettis (46) and Craig Overton (39) whilst Robert Hutton took 5-33 for the visitors. It was very much the Gear show post tea as Ian Gear was run out for a splendid 78 and Rob Gear was still there when the win was confirmed on the penultimate ball of the contest, for an unbeaten 66. Nick Parkin chipped in with a valuable 43 and the 32 extras were also most significant in the final reckoning as Newton Tracey made it two wins from two.

Heathcoat lost for the second successive outing although on this occasion they had a good excuse as they were forced to field a greatly weakened side owing to the club also fulfilling a Devon Senior Cup tie (that they won against Cornwood). Visiting Filleigh batted first and made their way to a hefty 298-4 with centuries from Godfrey Tucker (121) and Rob Collier (107). John Hickman then picked up three of the host wickets as only Matthew Handford, with an unbeaten 59, made any impression in the post tea session as the Heathcoat reply closed on 152 all out.

DIVISION TWO

BEAFORD strengthened their second place position in Division two with a six wicket home win over Weare Giffard. Ian Jury (43) and Alan Tuson (37no) , provided the main runs in a total of 151. Paul Herd took 2-17 in support of Alan James (3-19) and then Herd hit 66 as he and Mark Lake (33) , led the hosts to a comfortable victory.

Lee Hooper hit 72 as Morebath posted a healthy 234-8 at home to Shobrooke Park for whom Phil Steward took five wickets. Pete Steer then struck a superb 91 in the visitors reply which saw the final wicket fall with the score on 170.

Victoria Park were seven wicket winners at Shebbear who were bowled out for 112, knocked off with ease by the visitors

DIVISION THREE

BIDEFORD II struck an emphatic eigh-wicket win at Filleigh II who they bowled out for just 114. Only Jonathan Ralph (26) made any impression as Fred King claimed 4-27 in six overs and then Matt Allin (65no) and Alan Withecombe (21), helped the visiting side to a comfortable victory.

Holsworthy were led to a handsome total of 250-3 by an unbeaten century from Jack Greening who walked off at tea with 122 to his name. Leo McDowell struck 50 and Ryan Walter an unbeaten 41 as their side put hosts Newton Tracey to the sword. Chris Wilson (35) and John Walmsley (30) led the reply which floundered on 201 with Colin Walter (4-35) and Andrew Butler (3-30), the main wicket takers.

Bude became the latest side in the league to be unable to raise an eleven and therefore suffer an average point’s deduction gifting scheduled hosts Bratton Fleming the points.

DIVISION FOUR

BELSTONE remain top and still sport a one hundred percent record with three wins from three after a ten run win over visiting North Molton in a low scoring affair. The home total of 122 proved good enough to bag the points, North Molton’s reply closing with the final wicket lost on 112.

Petrockstowe bowler Ian Cockwill rewrote the clubs history books with an amazing spell of bowling in his side’s home game with Lynton and Lynmouth II. Brendon Harris (79) and Steve Cocks (29), led Petrockstowe to 253-9. After tea Cockwill took over and rattled through the visiting side. He sent down 7.3 overs and claimed all but one of the visiting wickets to fall! Cockwill finished with nine wickets for just six runs, with the only wicket he did not get being that of number nine Toby Haywood who was run out! There were eight ducks in the Lynton total and the only batsmen into double figures was number two, Richard Paine, with 14.

Petrockstowe Secretary David Kelsey said: “It was a phenomenal spell of bowling by Ian (Cockwill) , certainly the finest in the clubs history and the record books will have to be re-written.”

North Devon III were four wicket winners over hosts Victoria Park II who they bowled out for 137. Tim Lane (29) and Stuart Russell (25) put on 61 for the opening wickets but then the rot set in as Sam Meadowcroft, Stuart Pomeroy and John Wainwright, each bagged a brace of wickets. Tom Stanton then struck a superb 58 to see the visitors to victory. Nigel Taylor (3-34) and Mark Slade (2-29) took the bulk of the wickets.

Barnstaple & Pilton II were five run winners in a thrilling game at Westleigh. Brady Saunders hit 62 and Rob Holm chipped in with 40 in a Barum offering of 206. James Corry took 4-28 for Westleigh who were then bowled out for 201 with Lee Merrick (58) and Alan Down (31) providing the main contributions. Saunders completed a fine all-round effort for the visiting side with 3-46.

DIVISION FIVE

A strong Nomansland side claimed an 86-run win at home to previously unbeaten Bratton Fleming II. Ilfracombe were eight wicket winners at Barnstaple and Pilton III who they bowled out for 113 with Jason Newman, Jamie Sutton and Nathan Townsend, amongst the wickets. Dan Brierley then hit an unbeaten half century and Sutton weighed in with an unbeaten 45 as the seasiders claimed a comfortable win.
