NORTH Devon made a winning start to their defence of the Division One title with a 52-run win over visiting Braunton.

Craig Overton (55), Mike Hedden (45), Dan Bowser (36) and Jamie Overton (31), were the principle run getters in a total of 247-9 for the Instow side. Andrew Paddison claimed 3-26 for the visitors who were then bowled out for 195. Barney Huxtable (47) (pictured) and Harry Booker (29) provided the biggest individual contributions with the bat whilst Charlie Macdonough, Dan Bowser and Luke Ansell, each took a pair of wickets.

Sandford slipped to a third successive defeat as they went down by 27 runs in the Mid-Devon derby at Creedy Park against Heathcoat. Joe Smith sparkled with the bat, scoring 122 as the visitors were bowled out in the final over for 249. George Binns claimed 4-64 and then top scored with an impressive 23 ball blast that yielded 47 runs. However, only Ryan Glass (33), also made an impression, as the home reply floundered on 222. Martyn Williams was the most successful of the Heathcoat bowlers with 3-40.

DIVISION TWO

THERE was a second successive Division Two win for Barnstaple & Pilton, and a second straight defeat for Shobrooke Park, as Barum won by 49 runs in Mid Devon. Tom Popham (62) and Rob Holme (23), scored the largest totals in the visitors offering of 190. Pete Steer took 3-34 for the hosts who were seemingly on their way to victory at 105-1 with Australian Ben Stockton (70), in charge. Then came a collapse with the final wicket falling on 141 with only Richard Pyle (18) also making an impression with the bat. Steve Moore claimed 5-18 for Barum and his return from two outings with the ball this early season is now seven wickets for 27 runs!

DIVISION THREE

Matt Allin (152no) and 15-year old left hander, George Laing (112no), combined to see the hosts to an emphatic victory. Allin is pictured left.

Halberton settled quickly into the higher level. Last season’s Division Four runners up beat last week’s winners, Holsworthy, by 129 runs on their own patch. Batting first, the Mid Devon side chalked up 259-7, led there by Dan Coles (132no).
