Carr has formula for top-for finish

PLYMPTON know what they have to do if they want to challenge for promotion  this term – win the top-of-the-table battles.

The Harewood House side only lost five games last season and four of them were against top-two Heathcoat and Sandford

Having been third at the half way stage of the season, Plympton stumbled to just four more wins and the chance to go up was lost.

“I will be looking for us to finish at least in the top four and do better against the top sides than we did last season,” said new skipper James Carr.

“We lost to Heathcoat and Sandford both times we played them, but beat everyone else.”

Jeremy Williams was skipper last season, but has retired from the game. Somerset’s Lewis Gregory is attached to Heathcoat this season.

Familiar faces back in the fold after time at Plymstock are Ollie Mulberry and Dan Robotham.

We Hartslief, who made 429 runs and took 24 wickets, is back from South Africa for a second season,

Leading wicket taker Ryan Skinner – 30 last season - is out with a back injury against Bradninch on Saturday but won’t be out long.

“Ryan being out has allowed us to give youngster Todd Rossouw is 1st XI debut and hopefully he performs like we know he can,” said Carr.

Carr would like to be the captain to lead Plympton back into the Premier after an absence of three seasons, but is also a pragmatist.

“The season ahead is going to be tough, especially with other clubs in our division recruiting players and strengthening,” said Carr.

“We have a strong squad and will be competitive as we always are in whatever division and will be tough to beat.

“If we are in the top two at the end of the season it’s because we deserve to be there and will look forward to playing Premier cricket.

“It isn’t the end of the world if we don’t as the club is young and going through transition.

“With players at university, involved in school fixtures and coping with work commitments of young families, the team will change from week to week, which isn’t ideal to sustain a push for promotion.”
