Plympton Women get promotion.....

Plympton’s women’s cricketers have followed up the successful promotion of their male counterparts to the Premier League by winning the South West Women’s Regional Premier League. They went through the season unbeaten, beating last season’s National club champions, Newport both home and away. In Sunday’s final home game Plympton restricted Newport to 151-9 from their 45 overs having lost the toss and asked to bowl first by the visitors. Skipper Hazelle Garton (3-14 from 9 overs) and Sophie Mackenzie (2-24 from 9 overs) were the pick of the bowling, although all bowlers used picked up a wicket. Lauren Parfitt was the mainstay of the Newport innings with a patient 62. She did have a let off early in her innings, dropped behind square from a top edge but there was no second reprieve as she perished caught at point by Sophie Knapp as she looked to accelerate the innings late on.

Plympton’s chase got off to a steady start with Cait O’Keefe and Stephanie Hutchins adding 24 for the first wicket in quick time. The loss of both in quick succession with the score then on 34 was a setback but the situation was soon recovered as the returning from injury Amara Carr (37) joined Ali Kelly (57) and together they added 79 for the third wicket to place Plympton in a strong position. Kelly was joined by Sophie Mackenzie after the dismissal of Carr and she wasted little time in hitting four boundaries to take Plympton to victory by 6 wickets.

The girls now travel to Kibworth CC in Leicestershire on the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September where they will face the winners of the three other Regional Premier Leagues to determine an outright National Premier Club Champion for 2014.

2014 has indeed been a hugely successful year for the Plympton girls, the 2nd XI have only lost one game this season in their inaugural season in the Devon Women’s Cricket League 2nd Division, whilst their U15 side reached the Lady Taverner’s U15 Club T20 Regional Finals, losing out on this occasion to Newport.

The club are looking to still move forward and if there are any women and girls out there who think they would like to get involved then players of all standards are very welcome. Please contact Warren Carr onwarren.carr@devoncricket.co.uk
