Tony Price Devon Cup: Griffiths smashes ton

TONY PRYCE DEVON CUP

ANTHONY Griffiths hit an unbeaten century as Sidmouth crushed South Devon by 184 runs in the first round of the Tony Pryce Devon Cup.

With Griffiths leading the way, Sidmouth cruised to 294 for four in 40 overs – a total which was always going to be too many for South Devon’s depleted side.

Nick Gingell (30) was employed as a pinch hitter in Sidmouth’s first-wicket stand of 53, then Sam Richardson (49) helped Griffiths add 83 for the next wicket.

The runs just kept on coming with Hilton Cartwright (27), Saju Patirdar (22) and Zak Bess (21no) assisting Griffiths in partnerships of 62, 42 and 52 respectively. Griffiths soldiered on to reach 124.

Some of South Devon’s bowling figures weren’t for the feint hearted, although Dave Knowles and Viviek Kulkarni did kept it to less than six an over when they bowled.

South Devon were 43 for five after an early going over from Will Murray (2-17) and Cartwright (2-33) and looking at an early finish.

Opener Matt Blackmore fell for 33 at 57 to Nick Gingell (3-23), which could have signalled the beginning of the end.

However, Dave Baldock (37) and Kulkarni (16) added some respectability to the scoreline before South Devon were dismissed for 112 with six overs to go.

South Devon captain Knowles was realistic in his summing up, saying: “We were a bit short of players, but they are a top Premier side and this shows the difference between that and where we are in the A Division.”

It was one-sided the other way round at Bovey Tracey, where Sandford lost by eight wickets after batting first.

Only three players reached double figures – Russ Discombe (22), Adrian Small (33) and newcomer Gary Binns (23) – in a Sandford total of 137 all out.

Chris Clayton (26) and Ben Ayres (32) gave Bovey a 49-run start. From 66 for two Andew de-Boorder (50no) and Andy Fairbairn (27) saw Bovey home.

It is going to be a bit tougher in the last eight for Bovey as they will be at home to Sidmouth.

Tavistock chased 270 to win against Plymouth and got them with four overs and three wickets to spare – opener Peter Brown lashing 141.

Callum Whittaker gave Plymouth early impetus with 48 off the first 77 on the board, they Aussie Luke Jury took control.

Jury cracked 130 and was at one of the ends in stands of 65 with Whittaker, 53 with George Stephenson (16), 80 with James Nicholls (34) and 47 with Pasi Mawalage (16).

Shane Daymond (2-41) finally got Jury out.

Tavvy lost opener Wayne Downham to run out at 10, Brown kept accumulating runs though and his partnership of 141 with Daymond (31) gave Tavvy real hope they could win it,

Losing four wickets for 26 rusn – Nicholls (2-44) and Pavi Mawalage (2-43) the culprits – briefly put a different complexion on the game.

Brown found a willing running mate in James McGahey (36no) and a stand of 73 ended the game as a contest. McGahey saw it through to the end.

Former Devon paceman Keith Donohue (4-18) bowled Plympton to a 77-run win over visiting Barton.

James Carr (53) and Alex Trevarthen (30) were Plympton’s prime run getters in a 40-over total of 191 for nine. Dan Robotham (29) and Carr put on 67 for the second wicket with Trevarthen making the late runs.

Damon Calland (42) was the only Barton batter to survive long under pressure from Craig Donohue (2-30) and Dave Wrench (2-19).

Once Calland was sixth out at 86 – caught and bowled by Keith Donohue – Barton crumbled to 114 all out.

Matt Butterworth saw Cornwood over a middle order collapse by hitting 53 to set up a 50-run win over visiting Alphington.

Alphas’ seamer Andy Wilson (4-21) posed all sorts of problems for Cornwood as they dipped to 58 for six.

Butterworth, who went in at number eight, joined forces with Ben Warren (29) to put on 88 for the seventh wicket.

Alphington did their bit to help by giving away 54 in extras as the Corns recovered to reach 168 all out in the 35th of their 40 overs.

Alphington came unstuck early on against Andy Bees (4-33) and when Dave Haysom (25) was dismissed they were 69 for five.

Steve Pimm (32) and Matt Bamber (14) delayed the inevitable by adding 43 for the seventh wicket.

Pakistani paceman Aizaz Cheema brook the stand by bowling Pimm and proved too quick for the tail-enders. Five wickets went for just six runs as Alphington were hustled out for 112.

The first-round games between Bradninch and Torquay, Exeter and Braunton and Paignton and Budleigh Salterton have not been played yet.
