Cousens finds form at right time

ABBOTSKERSWELL are back in the relegation mire after dipping to a three-wicket defeat against visiting Paignton.

Abbots were all out for 123 in the 35th of their 50 overs – skittled by old boy Chris Kelmere with five for 32.

Charlie Garratt made 27 in a running total of 53 for two, but he was one of the casualties as kelmere and Miko Esktrom (3-33) sent Abbots reeling to 72 for six.

Mawgan Penrice (38) marshalled the tail and put on 40 for the last wicket with brother Owen (2)

Paignton found runs in reply hard to come by in reply and were 89 for six at one stage.

Kelmere (27) and Zubyar Hamza (25) had been and gone by then.

Mickey Cousens picked the right day to rediscover his form as it was his 26 in a stand of 32 with Miko Esktrom that got Paignton in sight of victory.

Victory leaves Paignton in third spot, six points behind Bradninch and 13 in arrears of leaders Plympton.

Abbots are one off the bottom of the table, but only two points behind Lewdown whom they have to get past to reach safety.

Richard Acton, the Abbotskerswell captain, said the team have to start batting as well as they bowl to get out of the bottom two and stay out.

“The pitch was good and Paignton’s bowlers were disciplined but that was no reason to slump from 53 for two to 73 for eight,” said Acton.

“Mawgan Penrice stood up at the end of our innings with a confident 38, which at least gave us something to bowl at.

“There were some cheap dismissals along the way. Some of us have to put a higher price on our wicket.

“I was very pleased with our bowling and fielding effort, so there were some positives to take from the game.

“We pushed Paignton all the way and they were not expecting to lose so many wickets chasing 124.

“The guys showed character in the field and we have to take that into this week’s game against Bradninch.

“It’s tight at the bottom but one win and that all changes.”
