HUNDREDS of primary school children in Newton Abbot will be introduced to cricket this summer now South Devon CC are part of the Chance to Shine programme.

Chance to Shine is an initiative run by the Cricket Foundation, sponsored by Brit Insurance and promoted by the England and Wales Cricket Board to get state school youngsters involved in the game.

South Devon is one of nearly 500 Chance to Shine clubs across the ECB Focus club network delivering high-quality summer term coaching and competition programme to primary schools.

Former Gloucestershire and Devon player Matthew Hunt is the head coach initially going into Decoy, St Michael’s and Rydon primary schools to spread the cricket message.

Dave Leaman, Club Coach spearheading the local initiative, said: “Our involvement in Chance to Shine has been fantastic so far.

“We have seen an increase in the number of young players attending our club as a direct result of our Chance to Shine coaching in schools,” said Leaman.

“It has also helped to increase the profile of our club as we have forged strong links with local schools.”

South Devon CC, which is based at Marsh Road in Newton Abbot just a six-hit away from the town centre, will be holding free, friendly Friday sessions (5-6pm) throughout the summer term.

Start date is Friday, April 20 for girls and boys aged 8-11 who would like to have fun and learn how to play cricket.

Peter Farrell, South Devon’s Chance to Shine manager, said: “This is a great opportunity for any junior-aged pupil attending a local school to pick up the basics of the game while having fun doing so.
