Sidmouth signal title intent
SIDMOUTH showed they have no intention of loosening their grip on the Premier Division title by handing out a 101-run beating on Torquay.

Torquay’s cause wasn’t helped by losing veteran seamer Ian Baker after two overs with a shoulder injury that required hospital attention.

It isn’t the first time Baker has had shoulder trouble during a game and Torquay will be hoping this latest episode doesn’t force him into retirement.

Sidmouth openers Matt Cooke and Liam Lewis flogged the Torquay bowling all around the Recreation Ground and out of it on the way to a stand of 187 for the first wicket.

Lewis, the first man out, only faced 80 balls for his 93 and rifled 14 fours and three sixes.

Cooke hit 12 fours and a six on his way to 92 before he was bowled by Nick Watkin (3-54).

When Torquay bowled too full they were driven and when they bowled short they were pulled.

Watkin and Mark Gilmour (1-43 off10) kept it tidier than most of their team-mates, who went for anything between six and 11 and over!

With Anthony Griffiths making 26 and Peter Randerson pummelling six fours in his 23-ball knock of 45 not out, it all added up to a total of 284 for four declared after 45 overs.

Sidmouth skipper Will Murray had his eyes on the two extra bonus points for a declaration win – and wasn’t disappointed.

Tim Western (33) and Dan Kruger (22) made early runs but 51 for none became 65 for three then 93 for four after Murray brought himself and Miles Dalton into the attack.

Murray, whose first three overs were run-less, took two for 32 and Dalton had four for 31 with his leg-spin as Torquay started to fall further behind the clock.

Matt Thompson kept one end going for a fine 70 off 73 balls with a six and eight fours.

Scott Baldry (20) and Gilmour (21) offered support as well.

But from 177 for five the scoring became binary – 1, 1, 0, 0 – as Torquay tumbled to 183 all out.
